There are many reasons for skipping meals. Some people do not have enough time, while others choose to fast using the 16/8 intermittent fasting method, which means fasting for 16 hours and eating within 8 hours, usually starting at noon. Fasting for long periods of time causes the body to change its biological rhythm, causing the stomach to secrete more acid, causing symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux. The burning sensation in the chest and mouth in the morning is a direct result of this acid.

According to doctors, saliva acts as a natural acid neutralizer, helping to clean, protect and remineralize tooth enamel.

When saliva flow is reduced, acids stay in the mouth longer, increasing the risk of damage to tooth enamel.

pH imbalance

Acid is one of the biggest threats to teeth. Normally, the mouth maintains a near-neutral pH of about 7. When the pH drops below 5.5, tooth enamel begins to be affected. This is the cause of tooth decay and tooth sensitivity.

How to protect your teeth

To protect your teeth from the harmful effects of skipping breakfast, doctors recommend some simple habits.

Accordingly, eating breakfast regularly helps stimulate saliva secretion, neutralize the amount of acid in the oral cavity and limit the risk of reflux.

Drinking a glass of water about 200 ml in the morning before drinking coffee helps protect the lining of the mouth and stomach.

Caffeine should only be consumed after the first meal of the day to limit negative effects on stomach acid.
