After literature, theater is cinema
The novel Red Rain by Colonel and writer Chu Lai will have another version - the film Red Rain, expected to be completed in 2025. Previously, in 2016, the novel Red Rain won the A prize in the novel competition of the Vietnam Writers Association and the A prize of the Ministry of National Defense Award. The work has also been adapted into a play, Cheo and kept the same name. Most recently, People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui and the Hai Phong Cheo Troupe performed the Cheo play Red Rain on the stage of the Hai Phong Opera House. Now, the People's Army Cinema has made the film Red Rain, recreating the 81-day and night battle to protect the ancient citadel of Quang Tri in 1972.

Regarding the novel Red Rain , author Bui Viet Thang's review in the Army Literature Magazine stated that he paid special attention to the ending that carries the spirit of humanity and national reconciliation. Cuong's mother (a young man from Hanoi ) went to the old battlefield to find the place where her son lay. Tan, Cuong's friend, told her: "Uncle... At the bottom of the river, there are not only our comrades lying but also many soldiers from the other side." In Quang Tri, Cuong's mother met Mrs. Lan, the mother of an officer of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Mr. Thang wrote: "The two mothers share the pain of losing their children even though when they were alive, they stood on two different fronts. A touching ending that creates many echoes in the hearts of readers."
Writer Chu Lai said that in his script, the line: "Uncle, at the bottom of the river, there are not only our comrades but also soldiers on the other side, many" is still there. "Keep it, there must be the story of those two mothers, that is the theme. The story of the fight has been written for a long time, the meeting of the two mothers is the important thing", writer Chu Lai said.
The film is expected to last about 120 minutes and will be directed by Dang Thai Huyen. Red Rain is set mainly in Quang Tri and some locations in Thua Thien-Hue, Hanoi and Paris (France). The film crew is expected to number more than 1,000 people. Writer Chu Lai said the film set was built on an area of 50 hectares in Quang Tri.
Heroine in the age of "blood and flowers"
Writer Chu Lai said that the film script will be different from the stage script, the big scenes make this difference. He also has complete faith in the People's Army Cinema, that the film crew will recreate the war. "The film script is different from the stage version, because the film will build big scenes. When building big scenes, I will not go there, will not disturb people, let people focus on the work. The theme of the haunted Quang Tri citadel will have tanks, oxen, and headquarters of both sides. They rented the whole land to build a new scene similar to the citadel. They also showed it to me, I immediately nodded," writer Chu Lai said.

The story of women in the original Red Rain was also highly appreciated before. For example, Mrs. Lan - Cuong's mother, raised her son alone after her husband died, was also an officer in the diplomatic corps of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam Government. From Paris, she always looked forward to her hometown, where her son was fighting. As for Hong, the Quang Tri guerrilla, Cuong's lover during the war, she was also a unique model of a heroic woman, only found in Vietnam in the era of blood and flowers.
Red Rain has just organized a search for actors in Hanoi, then in Ho Chi Minh City. The film crew is looking for actors to play the three main characters: Cuong, Quang and Hong. Cuong (20-25 years old) comes from an intellectual family, a music conservatory student, speaks with a Hanoi accent, a fair-skinned scholar. Quang (20-25 years old), comes from a well-educated family of Hue origin, graduated from a military academy, has a Hue accent, is strong, and has an angular face. Hong (18-22 years old), comes from an intellectual family, is a student, has long black hair, and is gentle and beautiful.
Female director Dang Thai Huyen has a lot of experience with war and post-war films through works of the People's Army Cinema such as The Returner, Thirteen Wharfs, Moonlight Dance, Good Land, Where We Don't Belong.
From the writer Chu Lai's sharing about the two mothers, it can be seen that Red Rain will also have fierce scenes in the ancient citadel of Quang Tri, as well as the post-war story of two mothers who lost their children. The audience's tears with The Returned People show that we can expect director Dang Thai Huyen's skills when touching on the fate of women, on the post-war story.
