On the evening of October 22nd, at the Bac Ninh Provincial Cultural and Exhibition Center, the Hai Phong Traditional Stage Theatre performed the cheo (traditional Vietnamese opera) play "Red Rain" as part of the 2025 National Cheo Festival.

The Hai Phong Traditional Theatre participated in the festival with the play "Red Rain" - an adaptation of the novel of the same name by writer Chu Lai, known as "the pen of a soldier". The play recreates the 81 days and nights of fighting to defend the Quang Tri Citadel, depicting the image of young soldiers carrying in their hearts courage, faith, and a yearning for peace .

Based on traditional Vietnamese opera language combined with contemporary staging techniques, "Red Rain" is a tragic epic about memory and gratitude, where blood and tears transform into flowers, and where those who fell live on forever in the embrace of Mother Earth.
The play was adapted into Cheo opera by author Duc Minh, directed by People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui, with music composed by Meritorious Artist Dao Tuan Hai, choreographed by Meritorious Artist Hoai Anh, traditional singing taught by People's Artist Minh Thu, and artistic direction by Master Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, Director of the Hai Phong Traditional Stage Theatre.

The festival was organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province and related units. This is the first professional cultural and artistic performance event organized after the country implemented the two-tiered local government model.
This event marks a turning point in the organization, management, and development of cultural and artistic activities in the new context, demonstrating the determination of the culture, sports, and tourism sector to innovate, adapt, and integrate in the process of national development.

Taking place from October 20th to November 2nd, the festival brings together 12 professional Cheo (traditional Vietnamese opera) troupes from across the country. Hai Phong is represented by the Hai Phong Traditional Stage Theatre and the Xu Dong Cheo Theatre.

Within the framework of the festival, audiences enjoyed 21 elaborately staged plays that profoundly reflected social life, praised the homeland and country, honored moral and humanistic values, and aspired to do good.
Nearly 1,000 artists, actors, and musicians participated in the performance, presenting outstanding works that were meticulously invested in both their ideological content and artistic staging.

On the morning of October 23rd, the Eastern Region Cheo Theatre will participate in the festival with the play "Love Story by the River," a work rich in poetry and imbued with the spirit of the Northern Vietnamese countryside. The play is written by Dr. Tran Dinh Ngon, directed by People's Artist Le Tuan Cuong, with music composed by Meritorious Artist Vu Van Hoan, art design by People's Artist Nguyen Dat Tang, choreography by Meritorious Artist Hoai Anh, and artistic direction by Master Do Thi Khanh Huong, Acting Director of the Theatre.

With the participation of talented artists such as Ta Quang Phuc, Nguyen Thi Thu Hue, and People's Artist Truong Manh Thang, the performance promises to bring a unique, simple yet profound color to this year's festival.
Originating from the Kinh Bac region – the cradle of folk art – the melodies of Cheo opera resounding at this year's festival are not only a tribute to the past but also a bridge connecting the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam, contributing to the dissemination of traditional values and nurturing the souls of Vietnamese people in the new era.
