Overview of the Conference.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Phung Dinh Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Thanh Hoa province, said that in recent years, food safety and hygiene has been a challenge for the whole society. For short-term profit, many production and processing facilities have released harmful products onto the market, seriously affecting the health and lives of the people, causing public outrage and eroding consumer confidence.

Recognizing that the risks to food safety and hygiene stem not only from production and processing but also from storage, especially during the exchange and sale of goods at markets and food businesses, the Department of Industry and Trade advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue Plan No. 58/KH-UBND dated March 10, 2022, on the construction of food markets that meet food safety regulations in the province, giai đoạn 2022-2025, specifying the roadmap for food business construction for each year for districts, towns, and cities.

Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, Phung Dinh Anh, delivered the opening remarks at the conference.

In addition, the Department of Industry and Trade continues to deploy working groups to all 27 districts, towns, and cities; directly conduct on-site surveys at markets throughout the province to inspect and guide the maintenance and development of safe food markets and food stores; and urge, guide, and resolve difficulties and obstacles faced by each locality in the process of maintaining and developing food markets.

Through the application of standards stipulated in TCVN 11856:2017 or criteria in Decision No. 08/2020/QD-UBND dated February 19, 2020, of the Provincial People's Committee, the physical infrastructure at most markets in Thanh Hoa province has received attention in terms of investment, construction, and renovation; equipment serving food business activities in markets is equipped appropriately to the actual conditions of each locality, meeting food safety requirements; small traders operating in markets have been educated and have developed awareness and understanding of implementing regulations on food safety and the origin of goods in their business activities in the markets; and the responsibility of the Market Management Board and the Food Safety Monitoring Team in the markets has been enhanced.

Thanks to the determination of the Department of Industry and Trade and the involvement of all levels and sectors, to date, 370 out of 389 markets in the province have met the standards for food markets, reaching 95%. Of these, 253 markets have been declared compliant with TCVN 11856:2017 standards, and 116 markets have been officially recognized as food markets by the Director of the Department of Industry and Trade according to the criteria for temporary markets, as stipulated in Decision No. 08/2020/QD-UBND dated February 19, 2020, of the Provincial People's Committee on the procedures and documentation for recognizing temporary food markets in Thanh Hoa province. Thanh Hoa has become the province with the highest number of markets declared compliant with food market standards in the country.

To effectively maintain the criteria after a food market is recognized, and to contribute to improving the results of food market development, the Department of Industry and Trade will continue to organize training conferences and provide guidance on maintaining and improving the quality of food market criteria in Trieu Son and Ngoc Lac districts in the coming period.
