The results of a study recently published in the journal Science show that supplementing with taurine not only helps increase lifespan (possibly by up to 10%), but also makes animals healthier thanks to improved bone density, blood sugar levels, memory, and reduced signs of aging.
Taurine is a sulfonic acid that the body can produce, and it is also found in some foods such as meat, fish, and dairy products. An international team of researchers has discovered that taurine levels decrease with age in many different species, including humans. People with obesity and diabetes have lower levels of taurine in their blood, while those who exercise have higher levels.
According to biologist Vijay Yadav from Columbia University, this research suggests that taurine may be a potential drug to help us live longer and healthier lives. However, taurine supplementation for the purpose of improving health and longevity should be approached with caution.
