Since the 90s of the last century, experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have assessed that Nghi Son, with the advantage of a deep-water port sheltered from waves and wind, if invested and exploited in the right direction, will open up new development opportunities in the direction of industrialization and modernization for the entire difficult land of Nam Thanh - Bac Nghe.

To prove those statements, exactly 3 decades ago (in 1995), the "historic handshake" between Vietnam Cement Corporation (Vicem) and prestigious Japanese multinational corporations took place to establish Nghi Son Cement Company. 5 years later - in July 2000, Nghi Son Cement Plant officially went into operation and to this day remains a symbol of far-sighted vision, of the desire for breakthroughs and of faith in the future.

Up to now, Thanh Hoa, with the driving force from Nghi Son Economic Zone, has been affirming itself as the national energy center with Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant, Nghi Son 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant and of course Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex. Thanh Hoa is also the center of the cement industry, home to the world's leading footwear and garment corporations. The processing, manufacturing, petrochemical, chemical, mechanical, electronic and metal production industries are also on the development path.

Back to Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex. It took 8 years to prepare the necessary conditions for the establishment of Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited - a joint venture to implement this national key project on April 7, 2008. But further, half a century ago, right after the country's reunification, Vietnam cooperated with the French company Beicip to implement the first Refinery and Petrochemical Joint Project, planned to be located in Nghi Son. However, it was not until the early 2000s that the Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex was re-promoted. It also took 10 years after the establishment of the joint venture, on November 14, 2018 - Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant officially began stable commercial operations, annually meeting over 40% of the market demand for gasoline and oil nationwide; contributing nearly 50% of the province's total budget revenue.

Another story from 15 years ago, during a soil survey trip, Prof. Dr. Do Nang Vinh - at that time Chairman of the Scientific Council, Vietnam Agricultural Genetics Institute and Hero of Labor, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lam Son Sugarcane Joint Stock Company Le Van Tam, shared an aspiration and also a vision: The land along Ho Chi Minh road has all the conditions to form and develop a "high-tech agricultural highway" with modern "agricultural cities" such as "milk - meat city", "vegetable - fruit city" and indispensable sugarcane city..., turning this land into "Israel of Asia".

Turning a scientifically based idea into reality, from the initial "core" of the Lam Son High-tech Agricultural Research and Development Center, up to now, with the "guidance" of Resolution No. 13-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on land accumulation and concentration for large-scale, high-tech agricultural development, not only along the 130km of Ho Chi Minh road but also throughout the regions of the province, concentrated, large-scale agricultural production areas have been formed, applying high technology with sugarcane, seedless lychee, cantaloupe, avocado, orange, grapefruit, guava... in cultivation; dairy cows, beef cattle, pigs, chickens... in livestock farming and shrimp, clams in aquaculture. In terms of fruit trees alone, by the end of 2024, Thanh Hoa will rank third in the Northern region and first in the North Central region in terms of area.

Vivid practice brings valuable lessons on the journey of innovation and development. From the first NTM commune Quy Loc to the "model commune" of poverty reduction associated with NTM Muong Chanh; from the renovation of mixed gardens to the achievements of Resolution No. 09-NQ/TU on "Strengthening the Party's leadership in rapid and sustainable poverty reduction in mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa by 2020"; from the story of Sam Son in the vision of the French more than a century ago to turning "smokeless industry" into the current economic spearhead; from the campaign "Supporting housing for people living on the river" to houses according to Directive No. 22-CT/TU; from the pride of Thanh land and people to Resolution No. 17-NQ/TU arousing "endogenous resources", "soft power" for sustainable development; from Directive No. 05-CT/TU to the implementation of Resolution No. 21-NQ/TW on strengthening, consolidating, building grassroots party organizations and improving the quality of party members in the new period... To see, the achievements in the past 5 years are the crystallization of the enthusiasm and intelligence of generations of provincial leaders through the periods; are a mirror reflecting the spirit of solidarity and self-reliance of businesses and people of all walks of life.

In particular, 5 years ago - on August 5, 2020, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 58-NQ/TW on building and developing Thanh Hoa province to 2030, with a vision to 2045 - the crystallization of the trust and wisdom that the Party Central Committee has for Thanh Hoa, the aspiration of the Party Committee, government and people in the province, and that is to fulfill President Ho Chi Minh's will for the land that he always loved. With "high determination, great efforts, drastic actions", by 2024, Thanh Hoa has risen to become the largest economy in the North Central and Central Coast regions, ranked 4th out of 26 provinces and cities in the North and ranked 8th in the country.

A new journey has begun, Thanh Hoa joins the nation in entering a new era with the determined direction: Developing Thanh Hoa to become a rich, beautiful, civilized and modern province by 2030;... a new growth pole together with Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh to form a development quadrangle in the North of the Fatherland. By 2045, Thanh Hoa will be a rich, beautiful, civilized and modern province; a comprehensively developed and exemplary province of the whole country.

Commenting on the draft document submitted to the 20th Provincial Party Congress, term 2025-2030, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested: Thanh Hoa needs to carefully assess the locality's distinct potential and outstanding opportunities; assess the space of the three traditional driving forces including investment, consumption and import-export to have solutions to exploit and promote better in the coming period; at the same time, it is necessary to identify new growth drivers, based on breakthrough developments in science and technology, innovation and digital transformation.

The suggestions of the head of the Government and the comments of experts, scientists, and leaders of ministries and branches in the Central Government are valuable handbooks for Thanh Hoa to conquer its immediate and long-term goals.

And because the flame of desire is nurtured, it will light up with new spirit and new faith!.
