These days, at Ha Tien Border Gate Economic Zone, the trading atmosphere is bustling from early morning to late afternoon. Many large trucks travel back and forth on the roads leading to the border gate. Shipments are quickly checked, packaged, sealed, and then transported to transit warehouses.
The Ha Tien Economic Zone covers an area of 1,600 hectares and is organized into functional areas: duty-free zone, industrial zone, tourism zone , residential area, and modern urban area. Secretary of the Ha Tien Ward Party Committee Nguyen Luu Trung said that the Prime Minister has approved the general planning of Ha Tien and the Ha Tien Economic Zone until 2040 in Decision 189/QD-TTg, dated February 22, 2024. "This will be an important driving force and foundation to help Ha Tien become an ideal destination for domestic and foreign investors. Many import-export enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises in the Southwest region, choose to import and export goods through the Ha Tien International Border Gate."
According to Mr. Nguyen Luu Trung, Ha Tien Economic Zone enjoys many support policies, creating favorable conditions for import and export enterprises. From there, enterprises can easily access the Cambodian market and neighboring countries. The management agency at the border gate creates favorable conditions for enterprises to carry out import and export procedures, helping to save time and costs. "It can be said that Ha Tien is gradually becoming an important border economic center of the Southwest region, contributing to promoting the province's economic growth and regional integration" - Mr. Nguyen Luu Trung said.
With its geographical location adjacent to the sea, close to Southeast Asian countries, An Giang is favorable for international trade. An Giang is also considered an economic and commercial center connecting 3 major cities: Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho City and Phnom Penh City (Kingdom of Cambodia). In addition to Ha Tien Economic Zone, the province also has many border gates, such as: Vinh Xuong International Border Gate, Tinh Bien International Border Gate, Khanh Binh Border Gate. According to Decision 456/QD-TTg, dated March 22, 2016 of the Prime Minister, An Giang Economic Zone is identified as a comprehensive, multi-sector, multi-sector economic zone, including: Industry - trade - services - tourism - urban and agriculture - forestry - fishery associated with international border gates; is an important traffic hub, a center for economic development and exchange between the countries of the Mekong sub-region, especially in relations with Cambodia... In recent years, Khanh Binh Border Gate area has attracted 7 investment projects, Vinh Xuong International Border Gate 1 project, Tinh Bien International Border Gate 10 projects. The projects put into operation have created jobs for thousands of workers.
Dynamics of border development
In recent times, An Giang has flexibly applied policies to promote border economic development such as investing in transport and trade infrastructure, expanding urban space, facilitating import and export through border gates. A series of solutions have been implemented synchronously, including: Upgrading transport and trade infrastructure; expanding urban space; promoting trade connections with Cambodia, gradually forming dynamic and modern economic zones. Along with the development of many key economic sectors suitable to the potential of the border area, the province's economic zones are gradually becoming a bright spot in cross-border economic cooperation, contributing to improving people's lives, affirming the role of an important economic and trade center in the Southwest region of the country.
With many outstanding advantages, in the coming time, An Giang will promote the combined strength and optimize the potential of the Economic Zone system. Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung said: "The province will connect the border through a system of 9 border gates, including 3 international border gates (Khanh Binh border gate is preparing to be upgraded to an international border gate), helping to boost the border gate economy and trade with Cambodia and the Mekong sub-region. At the same time, strengthen regional connectivity and linkages through the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway (completed in 2026), route N1 and the upcoming Ha Tien - Rach Gia - Bac Lieu expressway to create favorable conditions for attracting investment, developing logistics infrastructure, border trade, promoting economic, cultural exchanges and international cooperation with Cambodia".
The Economic Zone is not only the economic “locomotive” of the border region, but also plays an important role in ensuring national defense and security. The development of modern Economic Zones, linked with cultural exchange and international cooperation, will help An Giang become a bright spot in cross-border cooperation, contributing to improving the lives of residents and shortening the development gap between the border region and the inland.
