Sora 2 was once expected by OpenAI to be a big hit in the video creation space. CEO Sam Altman even added community features, and within the ChatGPT creator, this was considered a "nuclear weapon" that could disrupt the short video creation market structure.
However, just two months after its launch, Sora 2's user retention rate is alarming. Specifically, according to Olivia Moore, a partner at Silicon Valley venture capital fund a16z, although Sora's downloads continue to grow, initial user retention data is at a record low.
According to data from SensorTower, Sora 2's 30-day user retention rate is 1%, and its 60-day retention rate is 0%.
“This shows that the model is really attractive, and there is a loyal group of users who are creating and exporting videos from Sora. However, the majority of users have not continued to use the app,” Moore said.
For comparison, according to iResearch data, Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) has a 30-day user retention rate of 48.7%, and Kwai has a 46.2% retention rate. Even other social media apps maintain a 30-day retention rate of 15-20%.
Real-world testing teams also found that the rate of videos generated from Sora 2 being “acceptable” was only 5-10%. This means that a user would need to create 10 videos to be lucky enough to get a usable version.
Additionally, creating a video on Sora 2 takes minutes. Combined with a failure rate of up to 90%, users can spend hours just to get a decent video. This makes for a limited experience for most users.
Additionally, Sora 2 fails to build a community. A typical example is the buggy display mechanism where excellent, highly rated videos are not prioritized, but instead meaningless and low-quality works.
