Mr. Vo Thanh Hai (28 years old) breeds a species of fish with vibrant colors, which enthusiasts liken to 'Oriental jewelry', with prices ranging from several hundred thousand to several million dong per fish.
Thanh Hai was born into a family in Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city. Hai only studied until the 9th grade before dropping out and getting married. He has a special passion for ornamental fish, especially betta fish.

Initially, Mr. Hai only raised betta fish "for fun," to satisfy his passion. Gradually, people saw and liked the beautiful fish of various types swimming in his cement tanks, so they expressed interest in buying them.
Having initially focused on fish farming and recognizing its ease of breeding and potential market, in 2017, Hai decided to start his business raising betta fish with only 5 million VND in capital. At that time, he used this money to buy quality fish fry, plastic containers, and build cement tanks…
These betta fish possess a vibrant array of colorful fins, often described by enthusiasts as "Oriental jewelry." They are also known as fighting fish due to their aggressive nature.
According to Mr. Hai, this aggressiveness is actually a gift from nature to them. Because when provoked or preparing to fight, betta fish are at their most beautiful, their fins spread wide in a show of power, and their colors become more vibrant and dazzling than ever.

Through experimenting with breeding, crossbreeding, and visiting and learning from numerous fish farms both domestically and internationally, Hai gradually mastered the process of producing high-quality betta fish.
"Initially, I researched through newspapers and social media, then I went directly to farms to learn from experienced fish farmers. The more I learned, the more I realized the economic potential of this fish species," Hai shared.
Thanks to his skillful care, his farm has become increasingly well-known among ornamental fish enthusiasts. Currently, Mr. Hai has invested in expanding his fish farm to an area of 200 square meters, maintaining a population of 5,000-6,000 fish.

Mr. Hai raises 6 types of betta fish, mainly colorful varieties such as galaxy, nemo multicolor, metallic, black nemo… These types have gorgeous colors and are easy to care for, so they are currently popular among many young people.
The average length of an adult betta fish is about two finger lengths. This species of fish feeds only on bloodworms, mosquito larvae, etc.

Betta fish can be kept in glass tanks, plastic jars, etc. According to Mr. Hai, the fish fry are raised for 2.5-3 months before being separated into individual containers (separated from the school and raised according to a specific regimen to ensure the fish are healthier and more beautiful). They are raised like this for nearly a month, until they reach the required size and color, at which point they can be sold. The average lifespan of this species is 2-3 years.
"A beautiful betta fish is judged based on factors such as color and shape... Fish that are 3-4 months old will begin to mature in color and shape. During this stage, the fish are almost fully developed, and the most beautiful and suitable parent fish can be selected for breeding," the fish farm owner shared.

Each month, Hai sells thousands of pairs of fish, priced from 200,000 to 500,000 VND per pair. Beautiful, high-quality pairs can fetch up to several million VND. He films videos himself and shares them on social media groups to advertise his products.
"Every month, I earn between 20 and 30 million VND from my fish farm," Hai revealed.
In addition, he is also the owner of many major awards in domestic aquarium competitions, most notably the "Betta Friendship Cup 2024" championship held in April 2024 in Dong Nai province, for owning the most beautiful betta fish pairs.
The 24-year-old owns the largest ornamental fish farm in Can Tho, spanning 3,500 square meters.
