(Dan Tri Newspaper) - According to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US President-elect Donald Trump's repeated references to the idea of annexing Canada are a tactic to divert attention from the impact of his proposed tax policies.

"I think the narrative being told is that President-elect Donald Trump, a very skillful negotiator, is somewhat distracting people from the topic of tariffs. Oil, electricity, steel, aluminum, lumber, concrete, and everything that American consumers buy from Canada will suddenly become much more expensive if he imposes these tariffs," said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Earlier, Trump warned he would impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports unless Ottawa increased border security. On January 7, he stated he did not rule out the possibility of using economic pressure to annex Canada to the United States.
Trudeau said that Canada would never become part of the United States, and stressed that Ottawa would retaliate if Trump carried out this threat.
The Canadian Prime Minister recalled the 2018 bilateral trade dispute, when Canada imposed tariffs on Heinz ketchup, playing cards, alcohol, and Harley Davidson motorcycles. These were items that negatively impacted American workers when tariffs were imposed.
However, he added: "We don't want to do that anymore because it also increases costs for Canadians and harms our closest trading partner."
Recently, despite controversy, Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Canada, acquiring Greenland, and regaining control of the Panama Canal. He has stated that he does not rule out using military force to achieve his goals in Greenland and the Panama Canal, but also to exert economic pressure on Canada.
In response to Trump's tariff warnings, Prime Minister Trudeau argued that such a move would have a negative impact on both countries.
In a related development, the Global and Mail reported on January 9th that Canada is considering imposing retaliatory tariffs on a range of US goods, including steel, orange juice, and plastics, in response to the upcoming US administration's tariff policies.
