Losing to Austria, Poland will have difficulty passing the group stage of EURO 2024

(VTC News) - The Austrian national team defeated Poland 3-1 in the second match of Group D at EURO 2024. Robert Lewandowski returned to the Polish squad, coming on as a substitute against Austria. However, the Barcelona striker couldn't help his team secure their first point at EURO 2024. Austria started better than their opponents. Center-back Gernot Trauner – one of coach Ralf Rangnick's two substitutions from the previous match – opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a header. After a disappointing first half and trailing, Poland began to retaliate. The team nicknamed "The White Eagles" created several good attacking opportunities.
The Austrian team secured their first victory at EURO 2024.
Poland equalized in the first half following a chaotic corner kick in front of their opponent's goal. Krzysztof Piatek scored. After the half-time break, Austria regained their dominance. The match became more exciting and intense as both teams showed their determination to win and keep their hopes of advancing from the group stage alive. Poland brought Lewandowski on in the 60th minute. However, before the 35-year-old striker could make any impact other than receiving a yellow card, his team conceded two more goals.

Christoph Baumgartner put Austria ahead in the 66th minute. Poland pushed forward, leaving many gaps in their defense. Marcel Sabitzer capitalized on one such situation to earn a penalty for Austria. Marko Arnautovic didn't miss the opportunity to make it 3-1. Poland tried to attack at the end of the match. However, with Robert Lewandowski ineffective and failing to register a single shot on target, Austria successfully defended their two-goal lead.
