Promote smoke-free environments in restaurants, hotels and public places

On September 13 in Khanh Hoa, the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund (Ministry of Health) held a launching ceremony for the Campaign to strengthen the implementation of smoke-free environments in restaurants, hotels and public places.

The event in Khanh Hoa is one of a series of events being implemented in key tourism provinces and cities, along with Hue, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Targeted Campaign protect public health; at the same time, it is an action that contributes to concretizing Vietnam's commitment to implementing the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and promoting the implementation of the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms. On the other hand, it contributes to shaping a new social norm: respecting the community by saying "no" to cigarette smoke in public places.

Through this series of events, the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund aims to continue raising awareness among individuals and tourists about the benefits of a smoke-free environment, the right to breathe clean, smoke-free air, and compliance with regulations on smoke-free areas under the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention, thereby contributing to building the image of a civilized, friendly, and safe tourist destination.

Outstanding activities at the launching ceremony include: Ambassadors sharing the Campaign's message; Campaign launching ceremony to spread the message calling on hotels and restaurants to join hands in implementing regulations on smoke-free environments; Cycling - mobile propaganda activities on the streets; Hanging/pasting/placing "No smoking" signs at 200 hotels and restaurants in Khanh Hoa province.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Vice Chairman of the National Medical Council, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, and Director of the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund, stated: Building smoke-free hotels, restaurants, and public places is not only an act of protecting health, but also a way for us to affirm a civilized lifestyle. The Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund will continue to work alongside ministries, departments, localities, and businesses to implement many practical activities, from raising public awareness through communication to supporting the development of smoke-free hotel and restaurant models… contributing to building a green, clean, and beautiful image of Vietnamese tourism in the eyes of international friends.

Dr. Ha Anh Duc also called on others. Restaurants and hotels should comply with regulations and take the lead in implementing and maintaining a smoke-free environment, considering this a standard of business service quality, not only for public health but also to protect the health of their own employees. Every citizen should become a "smoke-free ambassador" – speaking up to remind and protect a clean shared space for themselves and the community.
