According to information from Cam Pha General Hospital ( Quang Ninh ), the hospital's medical team recently made a strenuous effort to save a woman who had drowned in saltwater after a 15-day battle for her life on her hospital bed.
Earlier, on November 18th, the Emergency Department of Cam Pha General Hospital received a 43-year-old female patient who had drowned in saltwater. She was admitted in a lethargic state, cyanotic, and in critical respiratory failure. At that time, her blood oxygen levels were extremely low, threatening her life every minute.
Recognizing the severity of the condition, the doctors quickly performed emergency intubation and intensive respiratory and circulatory resuscitation. Simultaneously, a chest CT scan was performed to assess lung damage. Initial results showed diffuse bilateral lung damage – a sign of acute lung injury following drowning.

A 15-day journey to save the life of a woman who nearly drowned in saltwater.
After being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit – Toxicology – Hemodialysis, the patient was sedated, placed on a ventilator, given antibiotics, and closely monitored. However, on the second day, the patient developed a high fever. On the third day, respiratory function worsened, blood oxygen levels did not improve, and a repeat CT scan was performed. The CT scan results showed that the patient's lungs had suffered severe, diffuse damage on both sides on the third day.
Given the patient's worsening condition, the intensive care team immediately held a consultation and unanimously diagnosed the patient with progressive acute respiratory distress syndrome.
The patient was treated with a lung-protective ventilation strategy, fluid and infection control, and comprehensive ICU care to improve oxygenation and reduce lung damage. This is a critical phase, requiring continuous monitoring and precise intervention to preserve each severely damaged lung segment.
Thanks to the appropriate treatment protocol and the close cooperation of the medical and nursing team, the patient began to improve. By the 14th–15th day of treatment, the patient's lungs expanded better, blood oxygen levels stabilized, and the patient was successfully weaned off the ventilator and had the endotracheal tube removed.
After more than two weeks of intensive treatment, the patient fully recovered respiratory function and was discharged in stable condition.
