In 1964, at the Binh Gia battlefield, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Nam, a soldier in the information front, met Ms. Bui Thi Hong, a female guerrilla who transported weapons. Their love blossomed from the days they fought together in the trenches.
In 1965, Mr. Nam's unit continued to participate in the Dong Xoai battle. Before leaving, he left a promise to marry Ms. Hong when the country was at peace . However, the battlefield in the Southeast at that time was very fierce, causing them to lose contact with each other.
Born in Cu Chi, Ms. Bui Thi Hong joined the revolution at the age of 15, from the reformed opera troupe to carrying ammunition and transporting weapons to the battlefield.
While transporting weapons, she was discovered by the enemy and had to have her right leg amputated to save her life.
Ironically, in 1968, Mr. Nam was also seriously injured and had to have his right leg amputated. He was captured by the enemy and held for 5 years and 5 months, only being released after the 1973 Paris Agreement.
After 10 years of losing contact, in 1974, Mr. Nam and Ms. Hong met again in a special circumstance: they both went to the unit to get prosthetic legs. "He looked at me - I looked at him, suspicious because we looked very familiar," Ms. Hong recalled.
Mr. Nam kept thinking about the girl he loved and proposed to Ms. Hong after they met again. Although Ms. Hong refused because she was concerned about her appearance, Mr. Nam persisted in pursuing her.
After 1975, they held a simple wedding and built a new life together in their hometown Cu Chi. To date, they have 3 children and 8 grandchildren.
After half a century of being together, they have overcome many difficulties in life. Currently, their health has declined, Mrs. Hong has to use a wheelchair due to an old injury. Mr. Nam shared: "On Tet, she was in the hospital for 10 days, I could only call to ask about her."
Mr. Nam always told his grandchildren about the past, reminding them of the sacrifices of many people to regain peace.
On the day they left with their bodies intact, when they returned, each of them left a part of their body on the battlefield. Now, in their old age, they have a peaceful life in their hometown, where they can gather with their children and grandchildren every day.
Half a century of war has passed, the smoke and fire of the past only makes the love of soldiers more brilliant. Even though it is the sacrifices, the years of separation without any information, not knowing when they will meet again. But with wartime love, no matter how fierce, then:
"Long nights of fighting
Day and night we are together, long nights of fighting
Day and night we fight, you and I still live close to each other".
