Barbados Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds emphasized this after signing an agreement with IOM Regional Director for Central, North America and the Caribbean Michele Klein-Solomon on August 26th to establish an IOM Caribbean regional coordination office in Bridgetown.
According to Ms. Symmonds, the new IOM office in Barbados continues to help the Caribbean community take advantage of regular migration despite challenges such as natural disasters like hurricanes and floods.
The establishment of the office with approximately eight staff members is "part of a national, regional and hemispheric effort to facilitate safe, orderly, humane and regular migration," the Barbados Foreign Minister emphasized.
Affirming that well-managed migration has the potential to boost economic development, Ms. Symmonds stated, "Countries like Barbados, with their aging populations, may, in the coming years, need migrants to fill significant gaps in their labor markets."
Barbados officially became the 175th member of IOM on November 30, 2022.
