Speaking at the ceremony, General Secretary To Lam emphasized that the event took place in a heroic and sacred atmosphere, leading up to the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd. The ceremony was an opportunity to look back on the 80-year journey of building and developing the Vietnamese diplomatic sector, and was also a shared joy and pride of the entire Party, army, and people.
Looking back over the past 80 years, General Secretary To Lam pointed out the core reasons behind the strength and success of Vietnamese diplomacy; affirming that the glorious 80-year tradition, achievements, and history have left the Vietnamese diplomatic sector with great lessons that remain valuable today and in the future. These lessons include: the crystallization of revolutionary theory and practice; unwavering commitment to national interests; combining national strength with the strength of the times; steadfastness in principles, flexibility in tactics; basing decisions on research, forecasting, and strategic planning; building a strong team of cadres as the key to success; and linking diplomacy with the people's support.
In the context of a world undergoing epochal changes, General Secretary To Lam stated that Vietnam's diplomatic sector is facing a historical mission: to maintain a peaceful and stable environment, creating favorable conditions for the successful implementation of the country's major breakthroughs, especially the two centenary goals, contributing to ushering the country into an era of prosperous development.
To achieve that goal, General Secretary To Lam proposed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs thoroughly understand and focus on implementing several major orientations. Firstly, building a comprehensive, modern, professional diplomacy deeply rooted in Vietnamese identity. Secondly, ensuring the highest national interests based on the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. Thirdly , enhancing Vietnam's contributions to world politics, the global economy, human civilization, and to peace, cooperation, and development in the region and the world. Fourthly, improving the quality and effectiveness of research, forecasting, and strategic advisory work on foreign affairs. Fifthly , building a team of diplomatic officials who are both politically sound and professionally competent, meeting the requirements and tasks of the new era.
General Secretary To Lam expressed his expectations: “I firmly believe that Vietnamese diplomacy – with the courage, intelligence, spirit, and character of the Vietnamese people in the new era – will continue to be a pioneering and core force with glorious responsibilities: creating and maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, pioneering in connecting cooperation, opening up and attracting resources for development, and constantly enhancing the country's position.”
In his response, on behalf of all officials and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son expressed gratitude for the profound attention of the Party, State, Government, and the General Secretary personally to the diplomatic sector, considering this a great source of encouragement and extremely important guidance for the work of the diplomatic sector in the coming period.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister affirmed that, with the courage and spirit of Vietnamese diplomacy forged over thousands of years of national history and tempered and matured during the Ho Chi Minh era over the past 80 years, Vietnamese diplomacy will certainly write new chapters in the country's journey of progress, bringing the country "to stand shoulder to shoulder with the great powers of the world" as President Ho Chi Minh always wished.
