In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), Ambassador Le Kim Quy stated that this was President Umaro Sissoco Embalo's first visit to Vietnam, taking place in the context of the two countries having just celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1973-2023). The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to assess the results of cooperation and to anticipate a new turning point for multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau.
Welcoming the President of Guinea-Bissau is a step in implementing the Party's foreign policy guidelines of the 13th National Congress, which are independence, self-reliance, peace , friendship, cooperation and development; multilateralism, diversification; and proactive and comprehensive international integration.
At the regional level, the fact that General Secretary and President To Lam welcomed African heads of state to Vietnam, including the President of Guinea-Bissau, in the first few months of his new position, demonstrates Vietnam's respect, close ties, and unwavering loyalty to its traditional African friends.
Originating from the heartfelt mutual support during the struggle for national independence, the relationship between Vietnam and African countries has been continuously strengthened and nurtured, becoming a model and testament to the power of South-South cooperation.
Ambassador Le Kim Quy stated that Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations on September 30, 1973, just one week after Guinea-Bissau declared independence and Vietnam was in the midst of its war for national reunification. For over 50 years, the two countries have maintained good political relations. Guinea-Bissau has actively supported Vietnam in multilateral forums.
Economic and trade cooperation is a prominent area. Guinea-Bissau is one of the top five African countries supplying raw cashew nuts to Vietnam, and Vietnam is Guinea-Bissau's third-largest export market. However, cooperation between Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau has not yet reached its full potential. Guinea-Bissau affirms that it considers Vietnam a priority partner and is ready to expand practical and effective cooperation in the future.
