“Based on the experience of successfully launching and operating the first reconnaissance satellite in 2023, the mission to launch three more reconnaissance satellites in 2024 was announced to vigorously promote the development of space science and technology,” the report said at a major policy-making conference at the end of the year presided over by leader Kim Jong Un.

The plan came as part of Kim Jong Un's speech at the meeting, in which he said the country had no choice but to boost its nuclear power and build deeper ties with anti-US countries.

Kim Jong Un also said Pyongyang has now ruled out the possibility of unification with South Korea, adding that the country must fundamentally change its principles and direction toward South Korea.

North Korea said it successfully launched its first military reconnaissance satellite on November 21, transmitting images of the White House, the Pentagon, US military bases and "target areas" in South Korea.

North Korea has since launched several more missiles, including its largest intercontinental ballistic missile, the Hwasong-18. These incidents have raised tensions in the region and triggered new sanctions against North Korea from the US, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
