China: Number of Artificial Intelligence Users Doubles in 6 Months

Generative AI is applied in many fields such as smart search, content creation, office support..., most commonly used by young, middle-aged and highly educated users.

According to a report released on October 18 by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), as of June 2025, China will have 515 million artificial intelligence (AI) users, doubling in just six months.

The CNNIC report said the figure increased by 266 million people compared to December 2024, bringing the proportion of AI users in China to 36.5%.

Generative AI is gradually entering people's daily lives across China, with the highest usage among young, middle-aged and highly educated users, the report said.

The group of users under 40 years old accounts for 74.6% of the total number of AI users in China, and 37.5% of them have a college degree or above.

The report noted that China-developed generative AI models have become widely popular among domestic users. Generative AI has been applied in many areas such as intelligent search, content creation, office support and smart devices.

The technology is also reportedly being actively exploited in areas such as agricultural production, industrial manufacturing and scientific research.

The report also notes that China's influence in the global AI field has been steadily increasing.

As of April 2025, China had filed 1.576 million AI-related patent applications, accounting for the largest share globally (38.58%).

CNNIC Director Liu Yulin said AI has evolved from a laboratory concept to a mature service that supports hundreds of millions of users.

The surge in AI generative users shows a shift from trial to daily use across the country, he added.

The report was released at the China Internet Infrastructure Resources 2025 Conference, held in Beijing on October 18./.
