China unveils 'organ chip' standards amid heated biotechnology race.

China is now aiming to take a global lead in a promising biotechnology field by establishing the first national standards for 'organ-on-a-chip technology'.

China's new standards for skin research-related technology were released in late October. These standards outline technical requirements for the form, cell source, component performance, and biology of skin chips, and address the design, manufacturing, and testing of the devices.

These chips are an emerging research tool that could replace animal testing and shorten the time it takes to bring drugs from idea to market, according to the South China Morning Post .

These chips are designed to mimic the response of the human body's organs to certain types of drugs.

These chips, about the size of a USB drive, are designed to mimic the function of organs in the human body and predict a person's response to drugs or various external stimuli. These chips are similar to integrated circuits.

Gu Zhongze, director of the Institute of Biomedical Equipment in Suzhou, China, said these standards will lay the foundation for China to become a leader in international technology standards. Gu stated that these chips could become the "most advanced and powerful" testing tools and standards for in-vitro skin-related evaluation.

According to the South China Morning Post , quoting Mr. Gu, skin chips could partially replace existing testing methods, including simple 2D cell culture, animal testing, and even experiments on artificial skin.

The Institute of Biomedical Equipment in Suzhou claims these standards will help China surpass competitors in the fields of cosmetic testing, chemical evaluation, and drug development. According to the research, these standards could also help overcome international trade barriers and increase export productivity.

The Institute of Biomedical Equipment in Suzhou also stated that Gu's team had achieved breakthroughs in several areas, including developing China's first organ chip model for scientific experiments at the country's space station.

This device is a line of vascular chips that can withstand microgravity, strong vibrations, and pressure changes. These are important findings, laying the foundation for research into methods of protecting the health of astronauts who have to work long hours in space.

According to the Institute of Biomedical Equipment in Suzhou (China), this milestone marks a significant step forward for China in the field of standardizing organ-on-chip technology. This has immense implications for promoting the development of regulations and standardizing scientific research and industrial applications in this field.

"The successful application of human body organ technology on chips enables rapid screening and evaluation of large numbers of drug subjects, providing a groundbreaking and transformative biomedical testing solution along with more efficient, accurate, and reliable technical tools for new drug development," according to the Institute of Biomedical Devices in Suzhou.

According to the Institute of Biomedical Equipment in Suzhou, Gu's research group was also the first in the world to propose a pioneering method for drug screening, integrating organ-on-chip technology with artificial intelligence (AI). In September 2023, Gu's group collaborated with the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to launch a model of organ-on-chip pharmaceuticals.
