Flooded schools in Ha Tinh are making efforts to clean up to welcome students back soon.

Prolonged heavy rains in late October and early November caused many schools in Ha Tinh to be deeply flooded and caused serious damage. With the spirit of "cleaning up as soon as the water recedes", teachers in flooded areas, along with local authorities and organizations, are making efforts to clean up and sanitize classrooms to welcome students back to school soon.

The rain and floods have caused the entire first floor of My Due Secondary School (Tran Phu village, Cam Due commune, Ha Tinh ) to be 50-60 cm deep, and the school yard to be 1-1.5 m deep. Since the afternoon of October 30, due to the complicated weather, the school has proactively allowed 881 students in 22 classes to stay home from school. However, the consequences of the two previous storms have not yet been overcome, and now the school is struggling with floodwaters: the stage, tables and chairs, and offices are all severely damaged.

As soon as the water receded on the morning of November 3, more than 30 soldiers from the Ha Tinh Provincial Military Command, along with teachers, parents and school staff, started cleaning up and collecting belongings.

Not far away, Le Duan Kindergarten (Cam Due Commune) was also deeply flooded. According to Ms. Ha Thi Yen, Principal of Le Duan Kindergarten, from 2 p.m. on October 30, when seeing heavy rain, the school informed parents to pick up their children early and urgently moved equipment and belongings to higher ground. Thanks to that initiative, all assets were safely protected even though the floodwaters sometimes rose to 1.2 m in the school yard.

On the afternoon of November 2, when the water had just receded, many teachers waded back to school even though their houses were still flooded. “My class is on the first floor, so I was very worried. Some of my belongings floated out into the yard, but luckily the gate was closed so I was able to salvage them,” one teacher shared.

What worries the teachers the most is the messy scene of the school that has just been renovated to welcome the inspection team to certify that it has met national standards at level 2. “We painted, redid the gate, laid grass, renovated the campus... But after two storms, the corrugated iron roof was blown off, the classrooms were damaged, and before they could fix it, the flood came again. The whole school yard, vegetable garden, and lawn were all covered in mud,” Ms. Yen choked up.

At Ha Huy Tap High School (Cam Lac Commune), floodwaters continued to surround the school for five days. Mr. Hoang Van Bau, Vice Principal of Ha Huy Tap High School, said: The classrooms were flooded 30 cm deep, but thanks to moving furniture to higher ground early, the equipment was not damaged. However, the tiles and corridor floor on the first floor were peeling off, and many trees were waterlogged and died.

In order to not interrupt the program of more than 1,400 students, Ha Huy Tap High School flexibly implemented online teaching from the morning of November 3. Since Saturday, the school has instructed teachers to develop online plans for all subjects, except physical education and extracurricular activities. For students lacking equipment, they will be taught in groups.

Visiting and encouraging schools in flood-affected areas, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh, Nguyen Hong Cuong, emphasized: Units continue to closely monitor weather developments and only allow students to stay home when there is a risk of unsafety. After the water recedes, it is necessary to urgently clean, disinfect, and treat the environment to quickly stabilize teaching and learning. The highest goal is student safety while minimizing program disruptions.
