In the early hours of December 11th, Copenhagen caused a shock at Estadio de la Ceramica by defeating hosts Villarreal 3-2 thanks to a winning goal in the 90th minute by Andreas Cornelius, thus further deepening the La Liga representative's crisis in this season's Champions League.
Despite their impressive form in La Liga, trailing league leaders Barcelona by just five points, Villarreal have shown a completely different face in European competition, earning only one point from five matches. This makes their sixth-match against Copenhagen, a relatively evenly matched opponent, a "final" for coach Marcelino's team.
Contrary to fans' expectations, Villarreal disappointed. Inconsistency and defensive errors cost the Spanish club dearly.
At the start of the second half, Villarreal equalized 2-2 against their opponents thanks to a goal from Tani Oluwaseyi. This goal rekindled hopes of earning points for coach Marcelino's team. However, Cornelius shone in the 90th minute to secure three points for visiting Copenhagen.
This was Villarreal's fourth defeat in their last five Champions League matches, pushing the club down to second-to-last place in the standings. They are now six points behind a play-off spot (currently held by Copenhagen), with only two matches remaining in the qualifying round.
AS assessed Villarreal's chances of progressing as very slim, and the team was almost 99% certain to be eliminated.
