The Biden administration wants this money added to the U.S. funding, which lawmakers are expected to approve in December. Two U.S. congressional officials confirmed the information to the newspaper, adding that the request was received on November 25.
Of this $24 billion, two-thirds ($16 billion) is reportedly intended to supplement the US arsenal that will be transferred to Ukraine, while the remainder is allocated to the Security Assistance Initiative for the country.
Following this news, Sputnik reported that Elon Musk, the owner of the X website, criticized the new proposal and deemed the aid package "unreasonable."
Biden's proposal also drew sharp criticism from some Republicans, with Senator Mike Lee of Utah arguing that the outgoing US president had wasted $4.7 billion of taxpayers' money by "unilaterally forgiving Ukraine's debt."
He wrote on X : "Congress should not give Biden a free gift to continue undermining the peace negotiations of his successor, Donald Trump."
Biden's request comes amid considerable uncertainty about the future of U.S. policy toward the war in Ukraine following President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.
Trump has repeatedly criticized large amounts of U.S. aid to Ukraine, and has also promised to quickly end the conflict in the Eastern European country. These statements have raised concerns among Kyiv and its allies that Washington will cut or even stop military aid to Ukraine.
On November 26, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also stated that the Biden administration would ensure " Ukraine has the money, ammunition, and forces to fight effectively by 2025 or negotiate, but in a strong position."
According to the American diplomat, Washington and its allies will continue their efforts in the coming weeks to provide ammunition, mobilize forces, train Ukrainian troops, and carry out other activities.
