The Russian national team has been absent from international competitions for quite some time now. |
Russia has been banned from all official UEFA and FIFA tournaments since 2022. The Russian national team and clubs are only allowed to play friendly matches, primarily against non-European opponents. Conversely, recent changes at the Olympic level have once again brought Russia's story into the spotlight.
Last week, the International Olympic Committee recommended allowing young athletes from this country to participate in international competitions under their own flag. This is a significant step forward from the previous regulation, where Russian athletes had to compete as neutral athletes at the Olympic Games if they qualified.
The IOC's emphasis on the principle that sport must be separate from political influence has put pressure on many federations, including UEFA. However, Europe's most powerful football organization is unlikely to change its stance. Sources indicate that reservations still exist within UEFA, as many member federations may refuse to compete if Russia is allowed to rejoin.
UEFA officials are reportedly convinced that Russia's return to national or club competitions is almost impossible under the current circumstances. A final decision is expected to be discussed further in upcoming meetings, as UEFA continues to monitor the overall situation and assess the readiness of its member federations.
While all parties want to provide the best possible conditions for athletes – especially at the youth level – UEFA's priority remains ensuring the stability of the tournaments and the consensus of the entire European football system.
