Why did "What's More Beautiful" become a hit but wasn't chosen as the soundtrack for the movie Red Rain?

Recently, the song " What's More Beautiful" composed and performed by singer Nguyen Hung has become a phenomenon in the Vietnamese music market.

According to data from The official SEA charts (official chart in Vietnam, operated by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), What's More Beautiful is currently ranked number one, the most popular song in Vietnam last week.

The chart's data is based on streaming from music apps like Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify and YouTube.

The chart of most favorite Vietnamese songs according to Billboard Vietnam data also named Con gi dep hon at the top position. On YouTube, the song's MV reached 24 million views, currently ranked 64th in the world's top 100 MVs of the week.

Excerpts from the song What's More Beautiful have also become popular background music. According to the reporter's records, as of September 14, there were about 270,000 videos on TikTok using the music What's More Beautiful to incorporate into videos expressing love for the country and national pride on the occasion of the September 2nd holiday.

Versions of What's More Beautiful performed by other singers in collaboration with Nguyen Hung at recent concerts such as Bui Cong Nam, Pham Thu Ha... were also widely received by the audience.

Despite creating a fever in the Vietnamese music market, What's More Beautiful still makes fans regret because it is not the official soundtrack of Red Rain.

Previously, Nguyen Hung first released What's More Beautiful at the end of July, introducing it as "a song inspired by the movie Red Rain ". The song was composed during the period when he played the character Hai, inspired by the story of soldiers in the past.

The song was not played in the movie Red Rain , but up to now, many audiences consider the song to have a stronger influence than the official soundtrack - Pain in the Middle of Peace performed by Hoa Minzy.

Netizens even misunderstood that What's More Beautiful is the theme song of Red Rain . Many people said they went to the cinema to watch Red Rain, waiting for the song What's More Beautiful to play in the movie, but were disappointed when they realized the song was not the soundtrack.

Some comments: "I was looking forward to hearing this song in the movie, so I stayed and waited until the movie ended, and in the end I felt very disappointed"; "That's the thing I regret the most both times I watched Red Rain. I just wish that the song played in the last scene of the movie, then nothing would be better"...

One audience member commented: "The film depicts the image of the soldier more deeply than the image of the mother. This song should be used for quiet moments on the battlefield and the climax at the end of the film when the soldier is burned alive will push the audience's emotions even higher"...

How does the director explain?

In a conversation with the media in August, director Dang Thai Huyen shared about choosing the theme song for the movie Red Rain.

According to the female director, the crew chose Pain in Peace to accompany Red Rain because of the song's profound meaning. "The song What's More Beautiful reflects the mood of a soldier going to war who always remembers his loved ones. But the theme song must be elevated, touching the pain, the core of war, which is the mother," said the director.

Director Dang Thai Huyen also said that she was moved when listening to Nguyen Hung's work. The song "What's more beautiful" made her remember the first melodies of this song when Nguyen Hung was in the stage of pondering the script and practicing with his co-stars on the set.

"A very clear image appeared in my mind: One day, Hung and Squad 1 will put their arms around each other and sing that song together on stage introducing the film Red Rain . And that wish has come true," the director shared.

As for singer and actor Nguyen Hung, he expressed his happiness when the song was loved and spread widely.

"I was overwhelmed because the song was shared so quickly. The song was performed at the Sao Nhap Ngu concert on August 24 in Ho Chi Minh City, the I Love My Fatherland concert on August 31 and the special art night celebrating 80 years of the journey of Independence - Freedom - Happiness on the evening of September 1 in Hanoi.

Sometimes, I want to be like an audience member, standing below to see what my whole stage looks like. Because singing on stage, I will never know what that feeling is like," Nguyen Hung said.

The actor added that every time he goes on stage to sing What's More Beautiful , he cries because of the emotional and meaningful lyrics in the work.

The song What's More Beautiful was written in two stages. When he received the script, Nguyen Hung wrote 50% of the music and stopped. After finishing filming the movie, he completed the remaining 50% of the music.

Nguyen Hung also shared with Dan Tri reporter that it took him about 2 days to write the chorus that went viral on social networks: "If the war is over and I haven't come home yet, mom, be happy, you have a heroic son, who has spent his youth sowing freedom for the country. To me, there is nothing more beautiful than that."

Nguyen Hung was born in 1999, from Gia Lai. Before taking on the role of Hai in the movie Red Rain , he was known as a singer in the band MAYDAYS, the owner of the song Miracle and a prominent face in the short film Wooden Fish - the work that won the Outstanding Short Film award at the 2024 Kite Awards.
