But officially entering the world that Vu Ngoc Giao built, readers will see that all are ordinary stories, containing compassion, where the author entrusts his dream of a better society.
Two of the many mainstream literary genres are realism and romance. If we were to classify Vu Ngoc Giao into one of these two areas, it would be controversial. Because from a realistic perspective, she is indeed oriented towards life with pages filled with material from reality. But she is also a person with “rose-colored eyes”. Her writing has ideal characters, and there are details that only exist in fairy tales. Therefore, it can be seen that Vu Ngoc Giao’s pen does not lean towards either side but stands on the border.
Entering the world of Vu Ngoc Giao’s short stories, readers will recognize traces of this border area. A picture of life is carved on each page of the book. For example, the story of a mother with dreams for her children and grandchildren, although she always hopes for her legs to recover (“Three seeds of muong in a sedge bag”); or the story of the “yoke on the road” of two men in “Warm smoke” and “What childhood for Lem?”, when they adopted an orphan even though their family was not very well off.
Reality is sometimes cruel. But in those sad stories, she used her heart to warm and spread many good things. The teacher in “Old Man Hac” (Nam Cao) always thought: “When can a person with a sore foot forget his sore foot and think of anything else?”. Yet, Mr. Tuc in Vu Ngoc Giao’s short story put aside his own interests to give all three wishes to his children and grandchildren.
As for the story of the two men who picked up the orphans, both wives were initially very upset. But gradually, the love that was nurtured made them more sympathetic to that unfortunate fate. Then the story of a lead-colored life brought hope and light ahead. That is the light of love, of the heart, the good things in life that the author wants to sow in the hearts of readers.
Vu Ngoc Giao's short stories do not show off techniques, the range of emotions between the details is not too large. She tells the story slowly and gently, but there are situations that create impressive turning points. The attraction in Vu Ngoc Giao's short stories is the "love". Love, humanity, compassion... and situations. Vu Ngoc Giao's way of creating situations is sometimes surprising, although not continuous and strange, it makes readers surprised and nod in praise. Especially, she knows how to deceive readers. Sometimes readers think they know the ending, but then the author "turns the tables" spectacularly. That is a carefully calculated move by this female writer.
“Three Cassia Seeds in a Sedge Basket” is the 8th collection of stories by Vu Ngoc Giao, recently published by Dan Tri Publishing House. We have had the opportunity to receive many of her works, from essays, short stories to novels, and realize that she seems to be indebted to human fate and is always concerned about those miserable human lives. Her stories and dreams for this life are truly meaningful. Because: “There is nothing more beautiful in the world than that/ People loving people, living to love each other” .
