Thanks to switching to durian cultivation, many farmers in Tien Giang have become rich. |
Synchronous and sustainable development
With favorable natural conditions, people with long-standing production traditions and experience, along with the province's correct policy of strong transformation towards concentrated commodity production, high productivity, guaranteed quality, food safety, etc., the fruit industry in Tien Giang province has had steady development in recent years, well serving domestic consumption and export needs. To date, the fruit tree area in the whole province has reached more than 88,000 hectares, an increase of nearly 6,600 hectares compared to 2020; output reached about 1.8 million tons, an increase of about 353,000 tons. Notable among these are the areas specializing in growing key crops such as: durian 24,500ha (yield of nearly 458,000 tons), jackfruit 15,800ha (yield of 332,000 tons), dragon fruit 8,500ha (yield of 300,000 tons), pineapple 14,600ha (yield of 261,500 tons)...
Farmer Nguyen Trung Tin, Hau My Trinh commune, Cai Be district, shared: “Previously, my family grew 3 rice crops/year, life was just enough to eat and wear. After learning from the experience of specialized areas, I switched to growing Monthong durian on an area of 0.8ha. Thanks to the application of science and technology, processing to produce off-season fruit as required, so the yield, quality and selling price are all high. Last crop, my family harvested more than 9 tons of durian, selling price 110,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, profit was more than 700 million VND”.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tien Giang province Tran Hoang Nhat Nam, in recent times, the fruit growing areas of the province have strongly applied science and technology to production, especially the application of high technology. Farmers have controlled many types of trees such as mango, durian, dragon fruit, longan, citrus trees... to flower as desired. This is a great advantage for producing off-season fruits, regulating the crop season reasonably, selling at high prices and easy to consume. Many technical advances such as using organic fertilizers, keeping grass in the garden, water-saving irrigation, using biological products to prevent pests, bagging fruit, producing according to GAP standards... have been widely deployed, bringing clear results. Currently, the whole province has more than 59,000 hectares applying sprinkler irrigation systems (accounting for 69% of the area), 100% of durian areas apply water-saving irrigation; More than 18,700 hectares of fruit trees (22%) are covered with fruit and nearly 61% of the area uses organic and biological fertilizers.
Tien Giang province has implemented many programs and projects associated with restructuring the agricultural sector, adapting to climate change, and meeting market demands. The provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment has coordinated to develop the Project on developing dragon fruit and durian until 2025, the Project on transforming the structure of crops and livestock north of National Highway 1; implemented three projects on building a production-consumption chain for dragon fruit, Hoa Loc mango, and durian in the period of 2020-2025, with a vision to 2030; the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program in the period of 2021-2025; the Project on agricultural and forestry raw material areas meeting domestic and export standards... The above programs and projects have helped farmers improve quality, reduce production costs, expand markets, and increase stable income.

Promote processing industry
Implementing the Resolution of the 11th Tien Giang Provincial Party Congress (term 2020-2025), which identified one of the three strategic breakthroughs as investing in the formation of key products and dynamic areas associated with the application of science and technology in the production-processing-consumption of agricultural products, the province has focused on developing deep processing industry to increase the value of agricultural products.
According to Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Tien Giang province Luu Van Phi, the locality currently has 14 fruit processing factories in operation, with a capacity of more than 47,000 tons/year. Enterprises have gradually invested in modern technology innovation, diversifying products, not only serving exports to the Chinese market but also expanding to the EU, US, Japan, Korea, Russia... Processed products include canned fruits, concentrated fruit juices, dried fruits... Some typical enterprises such as Tien Giang Vegetable and Fruit Joint Stock Company processes 20,000 tons/year, Long Uyen Company processes 8,000 tons of fruit/year, Nichirei Suco Vietnam Company processes 4,000 tons/year, Thabico Tien Giang Company is building an IQF frozen fruit processing factory with a capacity of 60,000 tons/year and coconut products of 35,000 tons/year.
In the coming time, Tien Giang will synchronously deploy fundamental and effective solutions to maximize local potential and advantages. The focus is on attracting investment in modern fruit trees, developing high-tech, environmentally friendly agricultural production, adapting to climate change, ensuring food security, and improving people's lives.
By 2030, the province will prioritize the comprehensive development of high-tech agriculture, forming large-scale production areas associated with enterprises and high-tech agricultural zones corresponding to key products. It is expected to build a high-tech agricultural zone on an area of 100 hectares in Diem Hy commune, Chau Thanh district, producing according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards, combining research and application of technology into production practices.
Tien Giang aims to develop modern agriculture by 2030, providing high-quality fruits for domestic and export purposes, especially Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region. The area of fruit trees is expected to reach
88,600ha, output of about 1.85 million tons. The province continues to maintain key crops such as durian, dragon fruit, mango, pineapple, green-skinned grapefruit, jackfruit... associated with high quality standards, applying mechanization and automation in production-harvesting-preliminary processing, building a chain linking farmers-cooperatives-enterprises; gradually forming large-scale, stable raw material areas for the processing industry.
Along with that, the locality actively encourages farmers to switch to organic farming methods, which are safe and meet the strict requirements of export markets; focusing on traceability, labeling, compliance with quarantine and food safety standards. The province promotes calling for investment in the field of post-harvest preservation and processing to maintain nutritional content and increase the value of agricultural products.
The fruit industry in Tien Giang province is affirming its role as the main driving force for local agricultural growth. However, to develop sustainably and improve competitiveness in the context of increasingly deep international integration, Tien Giang needs to continue to proactively restructure, promote the application of science and technology, build brands and reorganize production according to a more closely linked value chain.
