(NADS) - General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has repeatedly emphasized the Party's consistent guidelines and viewpoints on building and developing Vietnamese culture:
A progressive culture, rich in national identity, with its core content being national independence and socialism, Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought playing a leading role in the spiritual life of society, inherits the fine cultural traditions of the nation, while selectively absorbing the achievements and cultural essence of the world in order to strive to build a civilized and healthy society for the genuine benefit and dignity of human beings.
The book "Building and Developing an Advanced Vietnamese Culture Rich in National Identity" by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, recently released to the people nationwide, clearly portrays the General Secretary's thinking, ideology, policies, and viewpoints. The book is a selection of 92 articles, speeches, and talks by the Party leader on building Vietnamese culture over the past 60 years.
The book "Building and Developing an Advanced Vietnamese Culture Rich in National Identity" by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was edited and published by the Central Propaganda Department in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the National Political Publishing House, the Communist Magazine, the Vietnam News Agency, and other relevant agencies. Initiated in March 2023, the book was completed and launched on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of Vietnam's Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2024).
Three years ago, the Second National Cultural Conference, held in 2021 to implement the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party, was considered a particularly important event for the awareness of Party committees at all levels and the entire society. At the Conference, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong emphasized the task of revitalizing and developing Vietnamese culture and people, meeting the requirements of rapid and sustainable development. Culture is the spiritual foundation of society, both a goal and an intrinsic strength, an important driving force for national development. It was determined that cultural development must be synchronized and harmonious with economic growth and social progress. This is a fundamental orientation of the process of building socialism in Vietnam, demonstrating the superiority of our regime, as President Ho Chi Minh always said, culture illuminates the path for the nation. From the culture of national salvation and nation-building to the culture of development resources, this ideology has been inherited and developed by the Party through successive Congresses, with the goal of a prosperous country and a happy people. In this book, all the Party's policies, guidelines, and leadership achievements in cultural development are discussed in depth by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Looking back at the developments in ministries, departments, and localities over the past period, especially after the 2021 National Culture Conference, it can be affirmed that there has been a comprehensive transformation, particularly in the awareness of Party committees at all levels regarding the building and development of culture. The Party's policies and the General Secretary's directives have truly been put into practice.
Hanoi, the capital city, is a prime example. Between 2021 and 2025, the city invested over 14 trillion VND in restoring and renovating historical sites and landmarks, reviving many cultural and historical treasures. A separate resolution from the City Party Committee identified cultural tourism and handicrafts as strengths for developing the cultural industry. The updated Hanoi cultural development plan aims for the cultural industry to contribute approximately 5% of the city's GRDP by 2025. Over the past three years, thousands of events have been organized, creating a noticeable transformation in the city's cultural life.
The book's content is divided into three parts.
Part one, "Culture is the soul of the nation," comprises 19 speeches and articles by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the National Culture Conference implementing the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party; the Central Committee Conference, the National Conference on Ideological and Cultural Work, the National Propaganda Conference, etc. With compelling arguments and rich, vivid examples, he specifically explained the meaning of the concept of building an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity; analyzed the particularly important role and position of culture in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland; and outlined the goals, tasks, and solutions to fully and comprehensively promote cultural values.
Part two, "Comprehensive and Synchronous Development so that Culture Truly Becomes an Intrinsic Strength and a Driving Force for Sustainable National Development," selects 73 speeches, articles, and letters by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong regarding cultural fields as well as the construction and development process of cultural institutions. With rich practical experience and sharp theoretical thinking, and a deep understanding of the characteristics of each cultural form, the General Secretary has provided comprehensive guidance on literature and art; education and training; science and technology; journalism and publishing; and more.
Part three, "From General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's Cultural Thesis to Real-Life Practice," selects 32 articles and interviews with cadres, Party members, and citizens involved in studying, implementing, and concretizing the Party's guidelines and policies, and the directives of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the National Cultural Conference, linked to building national values, cultural values, family values, and the standards of Vietnamese people.
Associate Professor, Doctor, and Musician Do Hong Quan, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, affirmed: " Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong's book demonstrates profound knowledge and subtle understanding of the nature, characteristics, and features of culture, of each type of culture, literature, and art. Throughout many periods and in many positions, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has always shown deep concern for the cause of building, preserving, and developing Vietnamese culture, especially for literature and art and the country's artists and intellectuals."
