For the past several months, Ms. Duong Tung Ly, a music lecturer at Pham Van Dong University, and a group of friends have maintained cooking and musical performances for 85 mentally ill patients being cared for at the Quang Ngai Provincial Social Work Center.

On weekend mornings, hot bowls of vermicelli with pork roll were brought to each patient. Laughter, joy and warmth spread throughout the treatment area. This was the second time Ly’s group returned with meals filled with love.

After the meal, the music started again. Ly and the patients sang and danced to the tunes. Even though they couldn’t understand all the lyrics, they still immersed themselves in the rhythm – a “language” that connects across borders.
“When the music plays, they all dance. Music is the most unifying language,” said Ly.
According to Ms. Le Thi Bay, an employee of the Quang Ngai Province Social Work Center, music plays an important role in the treatment process, helping patients calm their minds, become more stable and comfortable than before.
The moments of eating, singing, and playing together have become precious medicine for wounded souls. Ms. Ly and her group of friends plan to continue connecting resources to maintain this charity activity every 1-2 months, bringing more love and sharing to those in need of care.
