Impressive figures for Can Tho after 20 years.
Reporting to President Vo Van Thuong and all delegates at the ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Can Tho City as a centrally-governed city, held on the evening of December 31st, Can Tho City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Hieu stated that after 20 years of formation and development, thanks to the attention, guidance, and resource support from the Central Government; the close supervision of the Government; and the enthusiastic and effective support and assistance from ministries and agencies, Can Tho City has experienced rapid development, creating a solid foundation for a new phase of development.
A notable achievement is the expansion of the economy ; by 2023, the gross regional product (GRDP) reached over 118,000 billion VND, 10.2 times higher than in 2004. The GRDP per capita in 2023 reached 94.7 million VND, 9.2 times higher than in 2004, contributing to improving the quality of life for the city's residents. The economic structure has shifted in the right direction, developing industry, trade, and services, while gradually reducing the proportion of the agricultural sector. Investment in socio-economic infrastructure has rapidly transformed the city's appearance, particularly in transportation systems, airports, seaports, cultural and sports facilities, healthcare, education and training, and rural development.
Can Tho City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Hieu delivered a speech at the ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of Can Tho City's establishment as a centrally-governed city.
Key transportation projects in Can Tho City, such as the My Thuan - Can Tho expressway, the North-South expressway (eastern section), the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, and the western ring road project, are receiving significant attention and are being actively implemented. Alongside these are other major projects under study and implementation, including: the Dinh An maritime channel dredging project, completing the channel for large cargo ships entering the Hau River (phase 2); upgrading Can Tho International Airport; and the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho high-speed railway project. These projects will continue to open up new and stronger development opportunities for the city in the coming years.
"The achievements made in the past are an important foundation for Can Tho's rapid and sustainable development in the future, in line with the objectives set out in Resolution 59 of the Politburo: By 2030, Can Tho will be an ecological, civilized, and modern city with a strong riverine cultural identity in the Mekong Delta region...", Mr. Hieu said.
Deserving to be the center and driving force of the Mekong Delta region.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Vo Van Thuong stated that Can Tho is a young, dynamic city playing a very important role in the socio-economic development, national defense, and security of the Mekong Delta region and the entire country; enriched by the alluvial soil of the Hau River, a branch of the majestic Mekong River. Can Tho is known for its orchards and vast fields; famous for its "white rice and clear water," with Ninh Kieu Wharf and Cai Rang floating market, reflecting the unique cultural identity and values of Southern Vietnam; the birthplace and gathering place of patriotic entrepreneurs such as Bui Huu Nghia, Phan Van Tri, Chau Van Liem... The people of Can Tho are rich in patriotism and revolutionary spirit, compassionate, generous, elegant, and creative, making great contributions to the struggle for national liberation, reunification, and the building and protection of the Fatherland.
President Vo Van Thuong commended the great achievements that Can Tho City has made over the past 20 years.

As a result, today, the appearance of Can Tho, from the inner city to the suburbs, has changed significantly, becoming cleaner, brighter, more beautiful; the lives of the people are better and happier; with a longer-term vision and higher aspirations… This is an important foundation, creating momentum for Can Tho to develop rapidly and sustainably in the coming years, worthy of being the central city and driving force of the Mekong Delta region, making a positive contribution to the development of the country.”
The President also suggested several directions and guidelines for Can Tho to continue building and developing the city to live up to expectations, truly becoming a regional center, ecological, civilized, modern, and deeply rooted in the unique riverine identity of the Mekong Delta. First and foremost, it is necessary to deeply understand the role, position, and importance of Can Tho to the Mekong Delta region. From there, focus on more effectively implementing the central government's policies and guidelines for the Mekong Delta and the city; maximize the potential and advantages of a regional center and a gateway to the lower Mekong River basin...
Next, it is necessary to further strengthen the application of high-tech science and technology, green technology, renewable technology, and the development of the digital economy, green economy, and circular economy… creating new production capacities, high added value of goods and services, and competitiveness domestically and internationally. From there, the city will truly become the center of the Mekong Delta in terms of trade, tourism, logistics, processing industries, high-tech agriculture, education, healthcare, science and technology, culture, and sports; a core urban center, a growth pole of the Mekong Delta and the whole country; contributing to connecting Vietnam with countries in the Mekong Subregion.
President Vo Van Thuong awarded the First Class Labor Order to the Party Committee, government, and people of Can Tho City.
"Building on the heroic traditions of the city, and the great achievements attained after 20 years of its establishment, I am confident that the Party Committee and people of Can Tho City will continue to achieve even greater results; constantly striving to build and develop Can Tho City into an ecological, civilized, and modern city, deeply rooted in the riverine culture; worthy of being a driving force and a core urban center of the Mekong Delta region," the President expressed.
On this occasion, President Vo Van Thuong also awarded the First Class Labor Order to the Party Committee, government, and people of Can Tho City for their outstanding achievements in socio-economic development, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.
On November 26, 2003, the 11th National Assembly passed Resolution No. 22/2003/QH11 "On the division and adjustment of administrative boundaries of some provinces," according to which, Can Tho province was divided into Can Tho City, directly under the Central Government, and Hau Giang province. From January 1, 2004, Can Tho City, directly under the Central Government, was officially established and began operation. 2024 marks a significant milestone in Can Tho's development as it celebrates its 20th anniversary of being directly under the Central Government.
