3 patients completely paralyzed, need ventilator

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/05/2023

On May 22, Dr. Le Quoc Hung, Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Cho Ray Hospital, said that currently, 3 patients with botulinum poisoning all have to use ventilators, with muscle strength remaining at 0.5 - 1.5, meaning they are completely paralyzed. While previously, only 2 patients had to use ventilators and the remaining patient's muscle strength was at 3/5 - 4/5.

According to Dr. Hung, in the case of BAT antidote, when the patient falls into paralysis, this is the effective time for the drug to take effect. The drug will have the effect of counteracting the toxin, neutralizing the poison, stopping the disease from progressing.

"For example, the body consumes 10 parts of poison, when 2-3 parts of poison start to attack the body, taking medicine will help neutralize and block the remaining 7-8 parts. Without medicine, there will be nothing to stop it, continuing to attack will make the disease worse and worse. Toxins will attack the nervous system, the muscles will not be able to be controlled, leading to paralysis," Dr. Hung analyzed.

Previously, on May 20, information from Cho Ray Hospital said that this unit, along with Gia Dinh People's Hospital and Tropical Diseases Hospital (HCMC), consulted and discovered 3 more cases of suspected botulinum poisoning. All 3 patients are from Thu Duc City (HCMC), including 2 biological brothers aged 18 and 26, the remaining person is a 45-year-old man.

Taking the medical history, the two brothers had previously eaten bread with pork sausage, the man had eaten fish sauce that had been left for a long time. Test results from Gia Dinh People's Hospital showed that the patients were poisoned by botulinum from food. However, the antidote for BAT has been exhausted, so the current treatment plan for the three patients is mainly supportive, including nutrition and mechanical ventilation.
