Apple officially appeals EU fine

Apple said it was appealing the European Commission's decision - and its unprecedented fine - went beyond what the law required.

Apple on July 7 filed an appeal against a 500 million euro ($586 million) fine by the European Union (EU), accusing the bloc of forcing the US technology giant to make changes that were deemed "harmful" to users.

In a statement, Apple said it was appealing the European Commission's decision - and its unprecedented fine - "far exceeds what the law requires."

Apple stressed in its appeal that the EU is interfering with how Apple operates its app store and imposing business terms that are confusing to developers and bad for users.

Last April, the European Commission fined Apple for preventing developers from steering customers away from its app store to access cheaper deals, violating the bloc's digital competition rules.

Last month, Apple announced changes to its App Store payment rules in Europe to avoid new daily fines. The European Commission is currently evaluating those changes.

Observers say the case could set a new legal precedent on the scope of the European Commission's responsibility to engage in dialogue with businesses in the process of monitoring the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA)./.
