An unexpected 'test' at the parent-teacher meeting.

"Today is a special parent-teacher meeting, and we hope you will all participate with me!"

After informing parents about general issues at school and in the class, the homeroom teacher unexpectedly made a sweet suggestion: inviting parents to take two "tests" prepared by the teacher, in order to assess their level of understanding of their child's academic situation and to "listen" to their innermost thoughts.

Surprise and excitement

First, there's a mini-game with 10 questions on the kahoo.it software. The content revolves around school subjects, subjects the child has recently tested on regularly, class schedules, after-school study time, the child's strengths, etc.

It had been a long time since they'd participated in a game like this, so everyone was visibly excited. Most parents were able to answer the teacher's questions, demonstrating that they still dedicate time to closely monitoring their children's learning progress.

At the end of the first round, the teacher thoughtfully gave three small gifts to the three parents with the highest scores.

In the second part of the competition, she sent 15 short questions for parents to answer on paper. This time, the questions focused on parents' understanding of their children's thoughts and feelings, academic and recreational interests, friendships, and future dreams. This part seemed more difficult, as parents and children sometimes lack common ground, partly because families have limited opportunities to share their thoughts and feelings with each other.

After completing the task, parents will compare their answers against the answer sheet their child completed earlier. Many parents are satisfied if their answers match those of their children. Some, however, appear thoughtful or confused...

I hope for more parent-teacher meetings like this.

For the first time, after many parent-teacher association meetings, I felt very satisfied and happy because the first meeting of the year carried many necessary "messages," focusing on the children. This was completely different from the rather tense atmosphere of the usual parent-teacher meetings, revolving around money matters, collecting fees here and cutting back on others...

The homeroom teacher was quite clever, somehow managing to persuade some experienced parents to join the parent-teacher association before the meeting. Therefore, during the program, the focus was primarily on the collective consensus of the parents on key issues, avoiding prolonged silences or periods of "looking around," "passing the buck," and "passing the buck" regarding the "position" of the parent-teacher association. This was because most people were wary of negative publicity and lacked the time to properly manage the situation.

The meeting was relaxed, lasting just over an hour, with high consensus from everyone. Before leaving, the homeroom teacher reminded parents about the psychological factors of children aged 14-15, what they need to do, and how to cooperate with the teacher to guide their children towards learning and acquiring knowledge in the most comfortable and effective way.

Hopefully, there will be more parent-teacher meetings like this, so that the perspective on the education sector becomes more friendly, avoiding some of the "unjustified accusations" at the beginning of the school year. It's a chance for schools and parents to find common ground, aiming for mutual understanding and better education of their children, rather than the familiar, recurring debates about air conditioning, facility support fees, and extracurricular activities that currently occur.

The effect of the test

Thanks to these two tests, parents feel closer to their children's thinking at this awkward age, gaining more empathy for their "different ways of thinking" so they can adjust how they share with their children accordingly.
