On the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the birth of writer To Hoai (September 27, 1920 - September 27, 2025), Kim Dong Publishing House introduces to readers three outstanding novels "The robber of Ben Boi," "Mine mother, mine father" and "The alleys."

The three novels are three slices of Vietnamese history and society with the context of Hanoi . They are typical works of To Hoai's sharp observation, rich imagination, realistic writing style and deep love for Hanoi.

“The robber of Ben Boi” is a story that takes place in the middle of the 19th century, the work revolves around the Cao Ba Quat uprising and the tragedy of loyal disciples. Through it, To Hoai depicts the heroic spirit and the desire for happiness of the people before the corrupt feudal court. This is a novel with a strong historical character, where literature meets historical data, reviving a tragic period in the past.

“Mother Mine, Father Mine” takes readers to Hanoi in the first half of the 20th century. The work reflects the changes in the countryside and urban areas of the North during the French colonial period, portraits of poor lives, pushed into a spiral of making a living, having to strive to survive by any means... Despite many bitterness, they still exude honesty, simplicity and hope for a better tomorrow.

“The Alleys” depicts the lives of Hanoians in the years after liberation, full of chaos, hardship and aspiration. The lives of the people living in the alleys become symbols of enduring vitality, of the desire for change to integrate into the new era. This is also one of the rare works that depicts the appearance of Hanoi right after the war.
