More than 200 elderly people, women and children in Abyei (Africa) were examined by the Vietnamese Engineering Team and given free painkillers and vitamins.

On October 27, the Vietnamese Engineering Team coordinated with the Pakistani Infantry Battalion to provide medical examinations to people in the Goli area of Abyei.

Pakistani forces set up tents with a capacity of about 300 people, arranged medical examination areas and waiting areas for local people. The Vietnamese engineering team prepared medical supplies, equipment, and medicines, and sent doctors, nurses, caregivers, and receptionists to serve the patients.

Major Nguyen Mau Vu, Political Commissar of the 2nd Engineering Team, said that Vietnamese doctors and nurses have advised local people to clean their environment and water sources to prevent malaria, dengue fever, intestinal diseases, and skin diseases. Vietnamese doctors and nurses have also set up a separate area to screen local women for breast cancer.

A total of 86 women, 65 children and 74 men were examined and treated by Vietnamese and Pakistani forces. They mainly suffered from skin diseases, infections and malnutrition.

Major Nguyen Mau Vu said the medical examination aims to help people access medical services, raise awareness; at the same time, strengthen trust and create solidarity between people and the Mission in Abyei.

The 2nd Engineer Team set off for Abyei on August 8, with 184 personnel. The Abyei region, covering an area of 10,546 square kilometers, has been disputed between Sudan and South Sudan since the 2005 civil war. Abyei is currently under the control of the Republic of Sudan.

The United Nations Interim Security Mission in Abyei (UNISFA) was established to maintain, ensure security and safety and prevent conflicts and disputes between the two countries.
