This afternoon, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , spokesperson Pham Thu Hang answered questions about the recent case of Vietnamese people possessing marijuana reported by the Japanese press.
The spokesperson said that immediately after receiving the information and implementing the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , Vietnamese representative agencies in Japan immediately contacted the local authorities to find out and verify the information, and deploy appropriate citizen protection measures in accordance with Vietnamese regulations as well as the laws of the host country.
The spokesperson affirmed that Vietnam is determined to strictly handle acts of producing, trading, storing, and transporting drugs and is ready to cooperate on both bilateral and multilateral channels in crime prevention in general and drug crime prevention in particular.
Previously, Japanese media reported that the country had seized about 1 ton of dried marijuana in 200 cartons on a cargo ship from Vietnam that docked at Tokyo port in June.
The Narcotics Control Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Health has arrested three Vietnamese nationals on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Law. They are suspected of colluding to smuggle marijuana for profit. One of the suspects is a 51-year-old man residing in Ibaraki Prefecture.
Japan's Narcotics Control Agency is investigating the possibility of involvement in an international drug smuggling ring.
According to investigators, Narcotics Control Bureau officers tracked the marijuana as it was shipped from Tokyo port and seized it in the northern Kanto region. Investigators also said the final destination of the shipment was a company in Osaka, western Japan.
