The family said the student had completed all the evaluation procedures and was declared eligible for graduation but was not awarded the degree at the ceremony presided over by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. Upon returning home, she took several sleeping pills as she felt insulted and under mental pressure. She is currently undergoing treatment at BIMS Hospital in Belagavi.
The student said that despite meeting all the requirements and having her name on the Governor’s approved list, some university leaders “deliberately refused to award the degree”. She also said she was made difficult after filing a complaint against her supervisor, Professor KLNMurthy.
Her husband accused the principal and the school secretary of being responsible. “If anything happens to my wife, I will go to the school and end it all,” he said.
According to The New Indian Express , in the face of strong public reaction, Rani Channamma University affirmed that it had not revoked or refused to recognize the doctoral student's degree. The school said that she started her doctoral program in November 2021, submitted her thesis on March 18, 2025, defended it on May 10, 2025, and was issued a notice of recognition of her degree on the same day.
The school confirmed that her name was on the Governor’s List of Eligible Students. However, the paper version of the degree has not been awarded yet as the school is awaiting the outcome of an investigation into the complaint against Professor Murthy.
“The process is transparent. The school has a zero-tolerance policy for all complaints and will follow the Council’s decision once it has concluded,” the statement said.
