Farmers left empty-handed after the flood

Reporting to the working delegation, Chairman of Tan Long Commune People's Committee Nguyen Sy Thuat said that as of September 15, the number of households in the commune that were flooded and had their houses damaged by flash floods and landslides and had to move their belongings and people elsewhere was 198/1,652 households.

"Currently, there are landslides and landslides that are very dangerous and make it impossible to live and must be moved elsewhere. Regarding agricultural production: 150 hectares of rice and 80 hectares of corn were completely buried and damaged; 25 hectares of mulberry trees were damaged. Of other crops, 6.2 hectares were flooded and completely damaged.

The floods also submerged and severely damaged 10 fish cages on the Lo and Gam rivers; 5.1 hectares of ponds were flooded; 0.8 hectares of acacia trees at harvest age were broken by storm winds.

Rising floodwaters also broke and collapsed 25m of the embankment at Dong Doi dam in village 16; a pumping station in village 9 was flooded and buried with sand and soil, causing damage; in villages Cuong Dat, village 5, Dinh Quai, village 1, irrigation canals were buried with a length of 250m.

After the flood receded, thousands of households in Tan Long suddenly had nothing, some lost their homes, some suffered heavy damage to their crops and livestock. Coming to Tan Long these days, the cornfields and rice fields are only a gray color of mud left by the flood. Many households living on the banks of the Lo River have no choice but to flee because landslides have reached their homes, they are worried about the future...

Speaking to Dan Viet, Mr. Pham Van Hoan, village 9 (Tan Long commune) still cannot forget the recent "evil" flood, which left his family not knowing when they will be able to recover.

Just a few weeks ago, traders came to my house to deposit 50 million VND to buy grapefruit. However, before the money was "warm", the flood had submerged more than 200 grapefruit trees, each fruit falling one by one until almost all were gone. Not only that, 7 sao of rice and 3 sao of corn were also lost.

"Yesterday I had to return the money to the traders that they had deposited," he said sadly.

The flood has passed but the consequences are too severe for the people in Tan Long, Mr. Hoan said, 200 orange trees are now at risk of having to be cut down because they have been soaked in water for too long, the trees' roots are rotten.

Ms. Do Thi Thong, 68 years old, village 13 (Tan Long commune) said she had never witnessed a flood that caused such severe damage as this one. Her family had 200 grapefruit trees, 3 sao of corn, and nearly 1 hectare of bamboo shoots destroyed by the flood, causing damage of over 100 million VND.

"With such heavy damage, it's like we've lost three years of crops. Now we don't have the capital to restore production. We just hope that the authorities and banks will support loans with preferential interest rates to restore production soon," Ms. Thong suggested.

Support with breeds, food... to help people restore production soon

Sharing the losses and damages caused by storms and floods with the people of Tan Long commune, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and its units have also implemented a plan to support people to restore production.
