Loss of sleep because of... landslides
After the big flood, the electricity pole was swept away right behind his house. Mr. Alang Vung (27 years old, But Tua group, Bhlo Ben village) still worries every time he remembers the moment the riverbank began to crack, pieces of land were eroded by water and collapsed into the riverbed. "During the recent flood, my whole family had to stay up all night for fear of landslides right next to the house. Just hearing a loud noise, no one dared to sleep," Mr. Vung shared.
Since the Pho River eroded, Alang Vung's family and many households living near the area had to temporarily move their belongings outside, to prevent any unforeseen events. This work has gradually become a familiar routine every rainy season...
According to the survey, the Pho River section running through But Tua and Son groups is currently seriously eroded with a length of about 700m, starting from the land of Mr. Alang Ngọt (Pho village) extending to the Song Kon 2 hydroelectric bridge. The erosion has been going on for many years, causing the riverbank to be deeply eroded, with some people's houses only a few dozen meters from the riverbank.

Mr. Alang Phan, Head of Bhlo Ben village, said that in the past, this area was flat land, used by people to grow rice and other crops. But in recent years, much of the land has been washed away by the water.
"Landslides not only cause loss of productive land but also directly affect the lives of about 200 households in the hamlets of Clo, Son and But Tua. Many areas of crops and perennial trees of the people were washed away, while the alluvial land along the river, which is the source of livelihood for many families, is rapidly shrinking," said Mr. Alang Phan.
According to Mr. Alang Beo, Head of the Front Work Committee of Bhlo Ben village, the landslide situation along the Pho river is complicated. Voters have made many requests but so far there has been no specific solution from the higher authorities," Mr. Beo added.

Urgent construction of protective embankments
To cope with the landslide situation, in recent years, the Co Tu community in Bhlo Ben village has implemented temporary measures such as planting bamboo, acacia and other trees with good roots to reinforce the riverbank.
However, according to Village Chief Alang Phan, these manual solutions are only temporary. "For long-term protection, there needs to be a solid embankment along the Pho River," Mr. Alang Phan suggested.

Mr. Do Huu Tung, Chairman of Song Kon Commune People's Committee, said that the locality has coordinated with specialized departments and offices to conduct field surveys, assess the level of impact and prepare project proposal documents. Through the survey, the commune determined that the landslide area at But Tua group not only threatens the residential area but also causes loss of production land, greatly affecting the security of life and economy of the village.
“The Commune People's Committee has included the investment project for the embankment to prevent landslides in the production field at But Tua group (Bhlo Ben village) in the public investment capital demand plan for 2026, with a total estimated cost of 20 billion VND. This is considered an important project in stabilizing the population, minimizing damage during the rainy and stormy season, and contributing to the implementation of environmental criteria in new rural construction,” Mr. Tung informed.
In addition to the solution of building solid embankments, the Song Kon commune authorities recommend that people limit production and cultivation close to the riverbank in areas at risk of landslides; at the same time, strengthen the warning system and monitor the riverbed during the rainy and stormy season.
In addition, the commune requested that the authorities support geological surveys and assess the possibility of new landslides to proactively respond...
