Abandoning the method of considering high school transcripts for admission, National Economics University explains

VTC NewsVTC News29/12/2023

According to the 2024 regular admissions plan, the National Economics University will no longer consider applicants from specialized schools or national key schools based on their GPA (average GPA of 3 years of high school) plus the scores of 2 subjects in the high school graduation exam.

Explaining this new point, a representative from the National Economics University said that, based on the admission results of previous years, the group of candidates from specialized schools applying based on academic transcripts are very strong, almost all meeting other conditions regarding aptitude test scores, high school graduation exam scores, international certificates, etc. The overlap rate among this group of candidates is quite high, leading to an increase in the number of "ghost" applicants (those who apply but don't actually intend to enroll).

"The exclusion of this group of candidates aims to reduce the rate of fraudulent applications during the admissions process, minimizing the impact on the overall admissions results and the rights of the candidates," the representative said.

The National Economics University explains the method of considering academic records is eliminated.

At the same time, in the 2024 admissions season, the National Economics University aims to increase the quota for admissions based on the results of prestigious aptitude and thinking skills assessment exams such as HAS, APT, TSA… This is intended to reduce dependence on academic performance and high school graduation exam results.

Specifically, in the 2024 admissions season, the university will use the results of the Thinking Skills Assessment Test (TSA) from Hanoi University of Science and Technology for all admission codes to increase opportunities for candidates to access, choose, and apply (in 2023, this method was only used for 7 codes).

Regarding concerns about whether the university will continue to reduce or eliminate the method of considering high school graduation exam scores in 2025, a representative of the university stated that the National Economics University's orientation for 2025 is to maintain a stable admission method, "still dependent on the results of the high school graduation exam."

The school representative also mentioned a new point in the 2024 university admissions plan regarding the conversion of English proficiency certificates to a 10-point scale instead of the 15-point scale used in previous years.

The conversion of international language certificates to a 10-point scale is a general regulation; even if calculated on a 15-point scale, it must still be converted to a 10-point scale. This change avoids double conversion and increases accuracy in the conversion process (multiple conversions lead to larger tolerances). "The conversion to a 10-point scale does not affect candidates," the representative affirmed.

In 2024, the National Economics University will enroll 6,200 students and 60 training majors/programs.

The school maintains 3 admission methods: considering high school graduation exam scores, direct admission, and admission according to a separate project. In particular, the admission rate based on high school graduation exam scores is reduced to 18% (25% in 2023). At the same time, the school increases the admission rate according to a separate project to 80%. The remaining 2% is for direct admission.

In this special project, the school divides candidates into 4 groups. The first group, students with international certificates, SAT 1200/1600 or ACT 26/36 or higher are eligible for admission.

The second group, candidates have international English certificates combined with the competency assessment scores of two national universities. Candidates must have a minimum English certificate of IELTS 5.5, TOEFL ITP 500, TOEFL iBT 46, TOEIC (Listening and Reading 785, Speaking 160, Writing 150). The competency assessment score requirements are similar to group two.

The third group, candidates participating in the capacity assessment exam of Hanoi National University or Ho Chi Minh City National University, achieved 85 or 700 points or higher.

The fourth group, candidates have an English certificate combined with the scores of two high school graduation exams (in which the compulsory subject is Math, plus the score of any subject other than a foreign language). In addition to the certificate requirements similar to group four, candidates must achieve a minimum of 20 points in one of the school's admission combinations.

Regarding the minimum quality assurance threshold for admission, candidates must achieve a minimum of 20 points if applying based on the 2024 high school graduation exam scores.
