According to Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock, the amount of 350,000 ringgit (more than 2.2 billion VND) is not only for each player but any member of the coaching staff of the Malaysian basketball team will also receive a similar reward.
“This is the third time I have given out such a reward at the SEA Games. MABA has valuable rewards in hand, ready to give to deserving players and coaches,” Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock emphasized.
However, Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock revealed that if they win the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games, the players and coaches of the Malaysian basketball team will not receive 350,000 ringgit directly. Instead, they will receive the equivalent value of a condominium worth 330,000 ringgit (more than 2.1 billion VND) and 20,000 ringgit in cash (more than 100 million VND).

According to Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock, the chances of the basketball team winning the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand are very high. Before attending the biggest tournament in Southeast Asia, MABA also spent a large amount of money to help the players and coaching staff of the Malaysian basketball team have many training sessions abroad to improve their skills.
Metro reporter commented: “Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock is confident that the Malaysian basketball team’s chances of reaching the top of the podium this time will be brighter after the change in regulations by the Organizing Committee. The reason is that the host country Thailand has set a condition that does not allow naturalized players to compete, instead only allowing domestic players.”
The MABA President also unexpectedly mentioned the Vietnamese basketball team directly: “In previous SEA Games in the Philippines and Cambodia, the opposing teams were tall and strong, especially Vietnam and Indonesia, who had good results. Therefore, with Thailand's new regulations, the strength of the Vietnamese and Indonesian teams will certainly be a bit weaker. At the same time, this also opens up opportunities for us to compete with Vietnam, Indonesia, or both Thailand and the Philippines. At least we have a bright chance to bring home a bronze or silver medal."
In addition to announcing big rewards for athletes who won gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games, MABA also announced the amount of money prepared to reward those who won silver or bronze medals. Accordingly, if they win silver medals, each athlete and coach of the Malaysian team will be awarded 20,000 ringgit (over 100 million VND) in cash and 10,000 (over 50 million VND) for bronze medals.
