Bryan Adams' sold-out show at the RAC Arena in Perth was cancelled just hours before the Grammy-winning singer was due to take the stage on his So Happy It Hurts tour, leaving thousands of fans disappointed.
Perth Water Corporation said in a statement: "Staff are working to clear blockages caused by grease, oil and rags, which have resulted in several sewer overflows" near the arena, and warned: "People should avoid contact with any puddles as they may contain sewage."
Fatbergs (a portmantein of fat and iceberg) form over time when non-biodegradable materials are flushed or washed down the drain instead of being properly disposed of.
Large chunks of fat can cause serious blockages in a city's sewer system. In 2021, a massive 330-tonne chunk of fat caused a disaster in Birmingham, UK, when it clogged the city's sewers for weeks.
Singer Bryan Adams apologizes to fans.
Bryan Adams apologized to fans for having to cancel the event at the last minute: "I'm really sorry we can't perform tonight. I was really looking forward to seeing you all." The singer wrote on Facebook on February 9th: "I appreciate your patience and support. I will perform as soon as I can reschedule."
The organizers of the event have promised to refund those who purchased tickets.
"Last night's concert could not take place due to an external issue with Perth Water Corporation. This issue could not be resolved in time," ticketing company Frontier Touring said on February 10 in a Facebook post, adding that this situation made the RAC Arena "unsafe for spectators."
The post stated: "The cancellation of the show is truly disappointing and we thank the fans for their understanding. Although every effort was made to ensure the show went ahead, this issue was beyond the control of Bryan Adams, Frontier Touring and RAC Arena."
However, this explanation came too late, disappointing concertgoers. They said they had to wait for hours outside the venue before the show was canceled, ABC News reported.
"Clearly, there was a serious problem early this afternoon. It's shameful to make people stand outside the venue for hours before a decision is made," one Facebook commenter wrote in response to the reservations staff's post. Another said: "Terrible… 15,000 people waiting on the streets for hours"...
Bryan Adams is scheduled to perform in Sydney on February 12th, followed by Brisbane and Melbourne before his tour moves to the US next month.
