"Royal Mail has carefully considered pricing, balancing affordability with the rising costs of delivering mail," said Royal Mail Commercial Director Nick Landon. "The cost of delivering mail continues to rise and further reform is needed to protect the universal postal service and make the business more financially sustainable."
“Letter volumes have fallen from 20 billion a year in 2004/5 to 6.7 billion in 2023/24 and could fall to 4 billion a year within the next four years,” Mr Nick Landon added.
Royal Mail also announced a number of other price changes, including a 40p increase for international standard letters from £2.80 to £3.20.
