Lam Dong is a key coffee region of the country with a large planting area and output. Of which, Arabica area accounts for an important proportion besides the widespread Robusta area. The terrain characteristics of Arabica cultivated at high altitudes, Robusta at medium altitudes, along with rich organic soil and cool climate create differences in color, caffeine content, grain structure and characteristic flavor of Lam Dong coffee. These factors are the scientific basis for identifying and protecting geographical indications.
According to the recognized technical description, Lam Dong Arabica coffee has a jade-gray color, caffeine content from a certain level or higher, light aroma, mild sour taste and sweet aftertaste. Lam Dong Robusta coffee has a dark brown color, fresh fruit aroma, chocolate, caramel, rich taste, higher caffeine and protein content. The protection of geographical indications covers the entire chain from harvesting (the rate of ripe fruit meets the requirements), preliminary processing, processing to packaging, to ensure traceability and product quality.
The leader of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong province said that the agency will take the lead in implementing regulations on geographical indication management, coordinating with businesses, cooperatives and farmers to build sustainable value chains, control quality and develop export markets.

Accordingly, the recognition of geographical indications also comes with specific tasks such as completing the raw material area system, applying sustainable farming techniques (shading, protecting upstream forests), controlling residues and preliminary processing standards to ensure product consistency when brought to market and meeting export standards. Experts and management agencies have organized training, technical guidance, and encouraged the building of collective trademarks and traceability systems for participating organizations and businesses.
According to Lam Dong provincial leaders, protecting geographical indications is not only a way to honor local values but also a driving force for Lam Dong to improve processing capacity and promote production - processing - consumption linkages. Thereby, increasing income for farmers and enhancing the reputation of Vietnamese coffee on the world coffee map. Relevant units are assigned the task of disseminating, monitoring the use of indications and protecting the interests of the producer community in the geographical area.
