NDO - International visitors to China will have better and more convenient travel experiences during the Lunar New Year 2025 thanks to improvements in the country's mobile payment system.

Citing information from the People's Bank of China, Xinhua News Agency reported that the number of international tourists paying when traveling in the country during the recent Lunar New Year holiday increased compared to the same period last year, from January 28 to February 4.

The total number of cross-border transactions processed by China UnionPay and NetsUnion Clearing Corporation jumped 124%. The total transaction value also increased by 90%.

In major cities like Shanghai, foreign visitors can now use international credit cards or mobile payment apps like Alipay to shop, eat and visit. Improved mobile payment processes allow visitors to enjoy more cultural experiences at the country’s tourist attractions.

Carla Uhrmacher, a tourist from Germany, shared that she was very pleased to be able to use mobile payment to visit and buy souvenirs at Yuyuan Garden - an outdoor park located in the heart of Shanghai.

"Using visa, mastercard or mobile payment methods are quick and convenient for international travelers," said Carla.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian, the number of visitors to China during the recent Lunar New Year increased by a record 150% compared to the same period last year.

Data from Alipay shows that, in addition to familiar destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, many new destinations such as Suzhou, Xi'an, Chengdu and Xiamen are also attracting a large number of tourists thanks to the implementation of mobile payment services.

Xinhua said the surge in international tourist arrivals could be largely due to China's ongoing efforts to improve payment services for foreigners.

China has been making a concerted effort to make it easier for visitors from around the world to use international credit cards by allowing them to directly link them to popular Chinese mobile payment platforms like Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Although mobile payments are becoming more convenient, tourists can still use cash to pay for tourist services in China. It is known that this country has about 70,000 banks, 320,000 ATMs and many currency exchange points to support foreign tourists.
