Using abortion pills of unknown origin without a doctor's prescription is very dangerous - Photo: BV
The most recent case was a self-abortion at home using medication, which was taken to the emergency room at Can Tho General Hospital by the family. The patient suffered from uncontrollable bleeding and serious complications after using abortion pills at home.
According to information from the family, the patient had previously bought abortion pills (unknown type and origin) online and secretly used them at home. After taking the pills, the fetus (estimated to be about 5 months old) was expelled, but the placenta did not detach.
At this time, the woman cut the umbilical cord herself and treated it at home. She then suffered from severe bleeding, cardiac arrest, and respiratory arrest. She was taken to the emergency room at Can Tho General Hospital.
The emergency team at Can Tho General Hospital determined that this was a critical emergency, so they immediately treated the patient and raised the red alert to Can Tho Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. An obstetric emergency team immediately came to assist.
Currently, the patient is still being monitored and treated at the intensive care unit, Can Tho General Hospital.
Specialist Doctor II Huynh Thanh Liem - Deputy Director of Can Tho City Obstetrics Hospital - warned that recently the hospital has received a number of emergency cases due to self-administered abortion pills at home, leading to life-threatening complications.
This once again sounds the alarm about the risks of using abortion pills of unknown origin without a doctor's prescription.
Doctor Liem said that on the market today there are many drugs of unknown origin, even fake and poor quality products being sold at high prices.
"Actual records at Can Tho City Obstetrics Hospital show many cases of serious complications due to unsafe abortions, without the prescription of a specialist. In some cases, patients arbitrarily bought drugs floating around the internet, or had abortions at clinics that were not licensed to perform the procedure.
To ensure the safety of health and life, we once again recommend that women with problems such as unwanted pregnancy should learn carefully and go to hospitals and licensed obstetrics and gynecology facilities for advice and necessary support," Dr. Liem advised.
