Ho Chi Minh City – Ha Huy Giap Primary School issued a warning after a fifth-grade student was given 20,000 VND by a stranger at the school gate.
On the afternoon of November 23rd, Ms. Nguyen Hoang Yen, Principal of Ha Huy Giap Primary School in District 12, stated that according to a 5th-grade student, at approximately 6:00 AM on November 15th, at the back gate of To Ngoc Van Secondary School (where the 5th-grade student is temporarily studying), a woman with her face covered approached and offered the child 20,000 VND, saying, "Here's some money for your breakfast." The student said she had already had breakfast and refused the money, but the woman insisted. At that moment, a parent dropping off their child at school noticed something suspicious and approached, causing the woman to flee.
"The student entered the classroom, gave money to the homeroom teacher, who then used alcohol to disinfect it and threw it in the trash. A short time later, the teacher showed symptoms of dizziness, headache, and drowsiness," according to a notice from Ha Huy Giap Primary School.
The school has worked with the local police to coordinate measures to ensure the security and safety of students before and after school each day in the surrounding area.
According to Ms. Yen, after working with the police and realizing that this could be a tactic used by criminals to approach and abduct students, the school immediately issued a warning to parents.
Homeroom teachers are required to take attendance at the beginning of each school day and contact parents directly if students are absent without prior notice. The school also instructs students to wait for their parents in the schoolyard and not to follow or accept toys or sweets from strangers. Parents, if they need someone else to pick up their child, must inform the homeroom teacher in advance.
In March, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training issued a similar warning after a student reported being approached by a stranger at the school gate, lured into a car under the pretext that "their father had been in an accident." Prior to this, using the same scenario of "their child is in emergency care and needs money urgently," many parents in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang were tricked into transferring billions of dong by scammers.
On the evening of November 24th, Mr. Nguyen Van Duc, Chairman of the People's Committee of District 12, stated that the district police had summoned the person who gave the student 20,000 VND for questioning and confirmed that there was no kidnapping or any information as shared by Ha Huy Giap Primary School. "The school principal acted hastily, so the information was inaccurate," Mr. Duc said. Specifically, a parent at Ha Huy Giap Primary School, while dropping her child off at school, saw a student borrowing money from a classmate who didn't have any. The parent then gave the student 20,000 VND and left. After receiving a notice from the school about "preventing harassment and kidnapping at school gates" in the class group chat, the parent corrected the information with the homeroom teacher. |
