A fake Fanpage impersonating the Fatherland Front Committee of Lam Thao District is calling for donations for families affected by the Phong Chau bridge collapse.
Speaking with the Phu Tho Provincial Electronic Information Portal, Mr. Nguyen Manh Toan, Chairman of the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee, affirmed: Given the impact of Typhoon No. 3 and its remnants on the district, especially after the incident at Phong Chau Bridge where pier T7 collapsed and two main spans of the bridge fell, the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee is focusing on coordinating with relevant departments, localities, and units in the district to urgently implement measures to respond to the floods and ensure the safety of lives and property for the people and the State. Therefore, at this time, they are not conducting any fundraising for the victims and their families. Consequently, the information circulating on the fanpage claiming that the Lam Thao District Fatherland Front Committee is calling for donations for those affected by the Phong Chau Bridge collapse is inaccurate; people should be vigilant and not transfer money to personal accounts on fake fanpages.
Immediately after discovering the fake fanpage, the District Fatherland Front Committee coordinated with the police to verify and clarify the identity of the impersonator. At the same time, they promptly disseminated and posted official information about the flood situation, directives from district leaders and the District Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command; and posted warnings about the fake content on the official Lam Thao Fatherland Front Fanpage and the Lam Thao District Electronic Information Portal.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy, Deputy Director of the Phu Tho Department of Information and Communications: With the rapid and instantaneous spread of information, the exploitation of natural disasters and floods by individuals to carry out fraudulent activities on social media not only causes economic damage to people but also reduces community trust in genuine charitable activities.
“Currently, when accessing information on social media, people need to filter information, not share inaccurate or unverified information; maintain vigilance, and not send donations or support to flood victims to accounts with potential risks. Agencies, units, and localities need to promote the sharing and widespread dissemination of information.” "Warning messages help people access official and accurate information sources. Along with that, detecting and reporting fake and fraudulent websites is also a way to contribute to protecting the community," advised Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy.
In recent days, many localities in the province such as Ha Hoa, Cam Khe, Yen Lap, Tam Nong, Lam Thao… have been severely affected by floods and heavy rain; especially the incident at Phong Chau bridge where pillar T7 broke and two main spans collapsed on the morning of September 9, 2024. In response to this situation, some individuals have used social media to post misleading information about the flood situation in these localities with titles such as: "Dam collapse in Yen Lap," "Storms and floods in Ha Hoa," or some articles and clips containing rescue images of a passenger car, allegedly one of the vehicles involved in the Phong Chau bridge collapse, being swept away 10km by floodwaters, and four people inside being rescued... Currently, authorities have identified the individuals involved and are in the process of clarifying their actions to build a case file and handle it according to the law.
