The Elderly Support Club is a model initiated by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly, creating opportunities for the elderly to improve their material and spiritual lives, access knowledge about healthcare, and enhance their role and contribution to society. Each club has 50-70 members, of which 70% are elderly; 30% are younger individuals with relatively good economic conditions. The goal is to connect members to support disadvantaged elderly people, helping them improve their lives and families, increase income, ensure health, and develop the community.
The Club for the Elderly focuses on eight main activities: increasing income, healthcare, volunteer home care, mutual help and community support, protecting rights and interests, raising awareness and knowledge, caring for mental well-being, and mobilizing resources. Each activity has a practical meaning, contributing to the care of the material and spiritual lives and promoting the role of the elderly.
Mr. Bui Quang Binh, Chairman of the Elderly Club of Pho Giua Ward, Hoa An Commune, said: Established on July 9, 2023, with 50 member clubs, the Elderly Club holds monthly meetings with many practical activities such as: health communication and talks; transferring scientific and technical knowledge on livestock farming and crop cultivation to members; guiding effective business practices... From a fund of 20 million VND, along with over 29 million VND mobilized from philanthropists and socio-political organizations, the club helps members access revolving loans. To date, 3 members have borrowed capital to develop production and business. The club cooperates with the Elderly Association of the commune and the health station to conduct health check-ups for club members and elderly people in the community; monitors the health of 100% of members monthly; maintains activities of the Tai Chi and Tai Chi group, men's and women's volleyball, and folk dance; Club members have raised over 3 million VND to support families of members affected by fires or accidents. Each year, each member contributes 20,000 VND from waste sorting to fund the club. The club also has a team of volunteers who regularly monitor and care for the health of elderly people in difficult circumstances, those who are lonely, sick, or ill.
Implementing Project 485 to replicate the model of Elderly Support Clubs in the province, from 2021 to 2025, the Elderly Associations at all levels have intensified training and communication efforts to create a shift in awareness and actions among Association officials; selected members of the Elderly Support Club Management Boards who are qualified, dedicated, and enthusiastic; and coordinated training to improve the skills of Elderly Association officials and the Management Boards of the Elderly Support Clubs... From 2022 to the present, the entire province has 45 Elderly Support Clubs with 2,458 members participating in activities. Of these, more than 1,600 are elderly people and 1,512 are women. Each club has 50 or more members (30 or more in sparsely populated areas), of which 60% are elderly people aged 55 and above, over 50% are women, and 50-60% are poor or near-poor. Each newly established Elderly Support Club receives a subsidy of 20 million VND and a blood pressure monitor and scale to support activities according to regulations. Since their establishment, the Elderly Support Clubs have operated effectively, regularly carrying out 8 areas of activity. The clubs maintain regular and organized meetings, and the management board selects rich, practical, and relatable content for members to easily understand and implement. At the same time, members receive attention regarding their health and mental well-being, access to loans, and technical support for their family's farming and livestock models, helping them to improve their economic development. This helps the elderly feel confident, live healthy, and contribute to society. To date, most clubs have health-promoting exercises; 100% of clubs have performing arts groups and recreational volleyball teams; 100% of clubs receive training and awareness campaigns at all levels and are supervised according to regulations; 100% of clubs have income-generating funds and operating funds managed by the clubs themselves according to club regulations; 303 club members have received loans to develop their businesses, increase their stable income, and improve their quality of life.
The clubs organize visits to members when they are sick, provide mutual support in spirit and material terms, contribute labor, provide healthcare, and participate in community activities. They collaborated with the health sector to organize 26 health education and counseling sessions for the elderly at 26 clubs, with over 1,500 participants; and with the Department of Agriculture and Environment, they organized two training conferences on waste sorting at two clubs, with 120 participants. They also carried out environmental sanitation in residential areas, sweeping and cleaning the cultural center area, village roads, and alleys, planting flowers, and creating a green, clean, and beautiful environment, contributing to the criteria for building new rural areas; actively disseminated the Party and State's policies and guidelines to the people during regular meetings; and encouraged members to practice physical exercise and sports, organizing cultural, artistic, and sports exchanges.
The activities of the Elderly Club not only contribute positively to the socio-economic development of the locality but also enhance the effectiveness of the "Elderly - Shining Example" emulation movement, affirming the position and role of the association and elderly people in the community; helping elderly people, especially those in difficult circumstances, to participate in beneficial activities to live happily, healthily, and usefully for their families and society.
