The decision marks Leavitt as the youngest person ever to hold the position of White House press secretary in American history. The previous record belonged to Ron Ziegler, 29, when President Richard Nixon appointed him to the position in 1969.

According to The Guardian, the job of a White House press secretary is typically to keep the American people informed about the president's activities and not to betray the leader's trust. “Karoline Leavitt is intelligent, tough, and has proven herself to be an extremely effective communicator. I have complete confidence she will excel on the podium,” read Trump ’s appointment statement on November 15.

The challenge for Leavitt will be to convey credible information and gain credibility with reporters, while still maintaining strong loyalty to Mr. Trump. The 1997-born young woman is considered a dedicated and quick-witted supporter who has fiercely defended the president-elect in television interviews.

Appearing in an interview on CNN's This Morning program in June, Leavitt had a heated argument with host Kasie Hunt, criticizing journalists Dana Bash and Jake Tapper for their "biased reporting" against Trump ahead of the highly anticipated debate between the Republican leader and incumbent President Joe Biden. Bash and Tapper were chosen to moderate the live debate. Hunt abruptly ended the interview after Leavitt refused to be distracted.

Leavitt, a New Hampshire native, served as assistant press secretary during the latter part of Trump's first presidential term (2017–2021). When Trump was defeated by Biden in the 2020 White House race, she became communications director for Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who had just been appointed by Trump as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Leavitt won the Republican primary and ran for the New Hampshire House seat in 2022, but ultimately lost to Democratic candidate Chris Pappas. However, her experiences seem to have given her invaluable public speaking skills.
